2010: A year in review at RPAR

Another amazing year at City of Ruston Parks and Recreation Department — from our youth basketball league to the National iHoops Basketball Skills competition, from East Coast Swing to Rumba dance lessons. There was also Ultimate Frisbee, Open Volleyball Night, the Fourth Annual Furry Fun Walk, the two-day K-9 Pool Party and the introduction and expansion of Zumba classes.

The fact that no one really keeps New Year’s resolutions is almost a cliché at this point. We all celebrate the New Year with our black-eyed peas and cabbage (if we’re good ol’ Southern folk anyway), wax nostalgic about the year that’s passed and make vows to ourselves and loved ones about how this year is going to be different.

Paving the way to pedestrian-friendly

Ruston businessman Joe Henderson remembers when getting to the front door of his financial-services office on South Vienna Street was a treacherous journey.
“The sidewalk was old,” Henderson said. “It had buckled and cracked. People were tripping.”
Now it’s a smooth, safe stroll for his clients and other pedestrians. In fact, Henderson says the work done by the city as part of the Ruston 21 quick response sidewalk improvements program has given his block “new curb appeal.”

Burning dangerous at this time

A 1/2 acre of land was burned in a grass fire off U.S. Highway 80 just west of Simsboro on Monday afternoon. Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 received a call about a grass fire at approximately 2:24 p.m. Monday and arrived on the scene at 2:30 p.m. with five firefighters.
