Burke’s salutes Guard, Reserve

At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Burke’s Outlet stores across the country became the latest business to sign a Department of Defense Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve.
Volunteers from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve organized the local signing. The ESGR is a Department of Defense agency created to educate employers on the rights of members of the Army National Guard and Reserves.
Volunteer John Emory said the organization is an important one.

Veterans should be remembered all year long

It began as a way to recognize the end of the “war to end all wars.”
Wars still exist, but that’s only made the meaning of the day more important than ever.
Today we celebrate Veterans Day.
It was on the stroke of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 that the world celebrated the end of World War I.
So today, Nov. 11, we celebrate again as tens of thousands of Americans are putting their lives on the line in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Being good parent no easy task

When I was growing up on the north side of Ruston, everybody had a mother and a father. There were very few exceptions.
And if you did not have a mother or a father, the community at large would become your mother and father. People cared for each other and for each other’s kids.

Maryanne Smith was honored to run the Riverside V 5K race in Shreveport with a group of amazing new runners who have been participating in the Ruston Parks and Recreation Start to Finish 5K training program.
