Tech wildlife professor makes big splash

I don’t recall exactly how the conversation led to the former Baltimore Colts, but as I was talking with a supporting member of our outdoor writer’s group at annual conference several years ago, the lady from Baltimore mentioned her favorite Colts player, Bert Jones. Knowing I was from Louisiana, she wondered what I might know about her hero.

Mental toughness is chief topic at Tech seminar

Spencer Wood, president of Icebox Athlete, recently spoke with Louisiana Tech student-athletes and coaches on the importance of mental toughness in collegiate athletics at the Wyly Tower auditorium.
Wood is a premier provider of mental skills and toughness training that championship programs, coaches and student-athletes across the United States have used with distinction, including recent workshops with athletic departments and leading teams in the ACC, SEC, Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences.

Tough redistricting job ahead

Loss of one congressional seat a result of low population growth in state

Recent figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau show that Louisiana has grown as a state.
But apparently the state is not growing fast enough.
Figures released Tuesday showed Louisiana with a 1.4 percent population increase up to 4,533,372. But based on those figures compared with those from other states, Louisiana will lose one of its seven congressional seats.

New hope for the holidays

Youth from New Hope Baptist Church in Ruston converged on Alpine Guest Care Center last week to sing Christmas Carols and pass out Christmas cards to residents there.

Choudrant High bids accepted

Choudrant High School will see the beginning of construction in early 2011 after the Lincoln Parish School Board approved the contractor bid during their December meeting.
Otha Anders, president of the board, asked the board to reserve the motion for outgoing Choudrant representative James Kessler, who campaigned heavily to have the bond passed — paid with property taxes — that is slated to pay for the construction.

P&Z approves annexation, laundry facility

The city of Ruston’s aldermen will have a few planning and zoning issues to consider when they convene for their monthly meeting in January.
When Ruston Planning Commission met last week, members approved a petition to annex 17.5 acres of property on the west side of Louisiana Highway 33 into the city limits. The area runs approximately 1,300 feet from the current city limits of North Village Plaza northward to Road Camp Road.
