Parents: Get involved

Q: How important is parental involvement and what are ways a parent can be involved in a child’s education? What are indications a child’s parents are not involved?
A: Moore: Kids are our future. A teacher can only do so much at school, and it’s up to parents to reinforce the lessons learned when the child gets home. Parents should want to know what’s going on with that child. I think it should be a first priority. But some parents might not come to school events because their work hours prevent it or they can’t afford day care.

“Everybody is pretty jumbled up right now,” said Techsters’ interim coach Teresa Weatherspoon during a mid-week media conference. “That was a big win we got against Nevada last Sunday and that’s what we needed to get into the thick of this chase.
“Our whole deal is to finish strong and get in a good position once the conference tournament gets here.”
But first, the Techsters will face San Jose State tonight (9 p.m.) and then Hawaii on Sunday (7 p.m.).

City looks for $8.5M in stimulus

“Those were projects that we have the plans ready and all we need is the funding,” said Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth. “The problem is we don’t know what’s going to work out on this stimulus deal. We don’t know who’s going to end up making these decisions.”
The Martin Luther King project would extend the existing roadway from its terminus on Farmerville Street to U.S. 167 to the west at a cost of about $2.5 million.
The Willow Glen Drive project would extend that roadway toward the new frontage road constructed south of Interstate 20, and it would run about $2 million.
