Grave news for a new chief

It will be hard to not think about the past eight years and look ahead to the coming election with a feeling that something needs to happen.
It is with a distinct certainty that thought occurs — even those who pooh-pooh the hardened news of gloom and doom my profession is dogged for thrusting into the public discourse will not deny things don’t feel right. Maybe it represents the ever-evolving attitude of Americans or an ever-decreasing attention span, a desire for more than we can get out of life as we know it or a chance to see something different happen in our lifetimes.

Uncle Sam, lend us a hand with the bill

It would not be surprising to see those costs begin to rise, considering how much recovery there is left to do.
Among the largest expenses were $50 million for debris removal and another $50 million to bring in law enforcement and National Guard units from other states to help with emergency response. Immediate road and bridge repairs have cost $36 million, and transportation for those who couldn’t evacuate themselves cost $21 million, according to the estimates.

Tech’s Porter in breakout form?

With his best showing of the young season in a 41-26 win over Southeastern Louisiana University, Porter just might have returned to the form that made him one of the top ground- gainers in the WAC last year.
The 5-9 and 190-pounder totaled a game-leading 97 yards on 19 carries, averaged 5.1 yards per assignment and had a 23-yard touchdown run that just might be the most impressive of his Bulldogs’ career.

STEM stretches to sixth-graders

The 23 students in the course have created pendulums out of strings, washers, paper clips and pencils, and later this year they will determine the altitude and landing location of cardboard rockets they launch and be submerged in a barrel of water to determine their bodies’ volume.
“This is about problem solving,” Project ACHIEVE Coordinator Cathi Cox said. “We’re getting away from that cookbook mentality, because life is not laid out like that. They’re building confidence with solving small problems and will work their way up.”
