Tax rededication may be pulled

Several mayors gathered in Dubach this week, discussing their view that the reserve, begun with a tax set up in 1974 and built through compound interest, should be split as is described in the original proposition for surplus funds.
Mays disagrees — the money, he said, represents growth of a reserve fund set up for equipment and liability at the Lincoln Parish Landfill, not a surplus, and should be put before voters for a possible rededication to address the parish’s aging courthouse.

Knotts lands team MVP award

Knotts displayed good control throughout his stay with the Pittsburgh Pirates-affiliated Spikes, ending up with only nine bases on balls and having one stretch where he didn’t allow a walk in 14 consecutive innings.

Water system improvements protect future

The system’s president is worried about the strain on its resources.
The community has also been given approval on an emergency application for state cash it will use for well repairs. Whatever else can be done to keep the small community’s water needs met is being done, be it through flow controls or requests to limit use.
The USDA’s loan is not for immediate, short-term repairs. The USDA money is tabbed for long-term work: line replacements, drilling a new well, putting in pumps and more.

Parish enjoys economic boost

“We’ve had some nice bumps, although one reason was because of an unfortunate incident,” said Kyle Edmiston, Ruston Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau president/CEO.
The trend that started at the beginning of the month is on course to continue. The threat of Hurricane Ike, which is projected to move into the Gulf of Mexico and make landfall somewhere between southwest Louisiana and Mexico, has prompted south Louisiana residents to again book rooms at local hotels. All Ruston hotel rooms are sold from Thursday through Sunday, Edmiston said.
