New dispatch boosts department’s efficiency

Previously, dispatchers would field 9-1-1 calls routed to the department or calls made over an administrative line and take down information like who was calling, from where and what the call was about by hand, radioing deputies out to the scene. From there, dispatchers would then double up on work by entering all that data into a computer system.
Once deputies completed a call, they’d end up back in the office completing reports, as well.

RHS earns national 7-on-7 berth

Ruston had a 7-0 record going into the title game against the Shreveport-based power and was 4-0 during “pool” competition; Evangel took the championship with a 20-10 victory.
Initially, head coach Billy Laird wasn’t sure if he was going to have the Bearcats participate in the national event, but then decided on Monday to do so.
“Our players have worked very hard all summer, have done a good job and they are deserving to be a part of the national meet,” he said Monday morning. “This is a reward for their hard work.”
Laird plans to take approximately 25 players to the tournament.

City sounds great in summer

But then, I shouldn’t be surprised, Ruston has long shown its love for song.
The blues show closed out the Smithsonian New Harmonies music exhibit, an impressive work that tried to tell the history of music in America, from the blues emerging from the Mississippi Delta to country and western, folk and gospel — influences that would lead to the creation of music forms that would become known as do-wop and rhythm and blues.

Jindal proves he's serious about change

Important projects in our area, however, were spared. The $200,000 allocated for the Northeast Louisiana Family Literacy Consortium, which operates six Even Start sites in northeast Louisiana, including the one in Lincoln Parish, remained intact.
It is a relief to know that the funding for a program that helps break the cycle of poverty by providing education to parents and children has been made a priority by the state of Louisiana. This marks the first time the Even Start program has received state funding in addition to its federal funding.

Students GEAR UP for college

“The ‘Bridges’ campers will use connect kits to construct bridges and do other construction projects using geometric shapes,” Tech GEAR UP director Glenn Beer said. “The Sports Medicine campers will be given heart rate monitors and skin-fold calipers. That one is designed to introduce them to sports medicine while also helping them begin thinking about a healthy lifestyle and how that could benefit them.”

Severance tax bill holds big benefits

Despite the benefits felt here in Lincoln Parish and in other areas throughout the nation, federal earmarks carry negative connotations for many. Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain especially is no fan of so-called pork projects.
Our local legislators continually remind us not to rely on state funding for parish projects, something that is challenging for smaller municipalities that lack a strong tax base.
Bearing all that in mind, state Rep. Rick Gallot, D-Grambling, has come up with a solution to solve some of our local funding woes.

Women dare to dream big

Somewhere I heard it said that people do not usually allow themselves to dream big.
Thinking their loftiest goals unattainable, perhaps this is why many people find themselves leading mundane lives.
While allowing one’s self to dream is a positive concept, I on the other hand, stumble and splat on the other end of the spectrum. Ever resting languidly in reverie, I might even be a
professional illusionary by now as I waft about in a bubble of my own creation.

WAC finalizing big TV deal

Chief executive officers on the WAC’s Board of Directors have nixed proposals from ESPN during the past two years. In 2007, the league turned down a deal that would have been worth approximately $3 million per season.
While the conference has been guaranteed a minimum of eight televised games through previous contracts, they have actually averaged 10 during the past several years.
Much of the increased exposure has resulted from the success that such teams as Boise State and Hawaii have had, particularly in regards to top 25 national ranks enjoyed by both both of those programs.

Slow down, be safe, save money on gas

The $4 per gallon gasoline that vehicles from compact cars to full-size SUVs are gulping down is motivation enough for some drivers.
Others may find themselves persuaded by police officers’ strict enforcement of speed limits, a full-force effort that began Friday.

Honey, do you have to do that?

At the top of the list of lessons learned during Year One is compromise. It’s something I still haven’t mastered, but I’m getting there, slowly but surely.
I’ve also learned plenty about my husband in the course of the past year — things I didn’t know before we tied the knot.
He’s got a lot of, shall we say, quirks that have taken some adjustment on my part. But, I’ve also learned what a good sport he is, because he has no problem with letting me air my complaints about his idiosyncrasies right here in the newspaper.
