Time running out to file taxes

• File electronically: E-filing is fast and accurate, according to the IRS. Once the return is accepted for processing, the IRS electronically acknowledges receipt of the return. Generally, when someone files electronically, their refund will be issued in about half the time it would take if they had filed a paper return. Those who choose direct deposit will get their refund in even less time and receive their economic stimulus payments sooner as well.

Bulldogs seeking consistency

“We’re developing more consistency, but you can never work on it enough or improve enough on being consistent.”
One of the chief areas of importance for consistency on the ’08 edition of the Bulldogs will be at quarterback, where sophomores Ross Jenkins and Steven Ensminger split duties.
Jenkins started off slow in the spring game before bouncing back to lead his club to the win and finishing with 16 completions in 27 attempts for 148 yards.
Ensminger went 12-of-32 for 222 yards.
Between them, they were intercepted three times, twice being logged on to Jenkins’ stat sheet.

School upgrades wise investment

When voters approved additional taxes to renovate Ruston schools, they placed trust in the school system to give our facilities the TLC they needed. Administrators in charge of spearheading these upgrades have made the best investment of taxpayers’ money.
Ruston High students and teachers already are reaping the benefits of a new and improved school, and the project isn’t even complete.
The work to revitalize Ruston school facilities is a community effort we can all take pride in.

Do what you can to recycle

Dennis Woodward, Trailblazer recycling center secretary, has made recycling a daily habit.
“Recycling does a lot of things. Number one, it keeps us from using up all of our landfill space, it’s better for the environment, and we use less energy, less water, oil and electricity,” he said. “Especially with the price of oil and depletion of the Sparta, we need to do our best to conserve natural recourses.”
Trailblazer is located at 302 Reynolds Drive in Ruston and will accept newspaper, office paper, ink cartridges, cell phones and aluminum cans.

RHS gets beauty back

“There are grassy areas you gotta walk on instead of the hills where most of the mud is,” said RHS junior Jordan Day, who adds she’s looking forward to being back in the main building when the first floor classroom renovations are complete in May.
Another junior, Peyton Williams, said the long walk between the portables and main building takes a little time between classes.
“I’ve never been tardy, but I feel very rushed between classes,” she said.
Due to the space occupied by the 13 portable classrooms in the parking lot, Milstead said student parking has also been an issue.

’Spoon returns to Techsters

And just as she did so often throughout her playing career, Weatherspoon was unveiled for her new role in an emotional and dramatic way. The announcement caught everybody off guard during the Techsters’ banquet, but one that quickly resulted in a rousing applause.
“I’m absolutely delighted that Teresa has decided to return to Louisiana Tech,” said Tech President Dan Reneau. “This is a great victory for us. I look forward to the future of Lady Techster basketball with Spoon as a part of it.”

Teaching kids to think green will pay off

There will always be those who, despite evidence to the contrary, believe that recycling is wasted effort. The costs of a parish-wide or city-wide program might preclude government from getting involved in the fight to keep Louisiana green, but there are outlets for the local resident who wants to recycle, albeit limited ones. Trailblazer, for example, offers newspaper recycling. Make sure this issue of the Daily Leader ends up where it should when you’re done.

Discussion makes project stronger

It took the Library Board 4 years to develop a plan for the vacant 20,000 square feet next to the library. It also took some prodding from the Police Jury in October of 2006 and again in November of 2006 to get the library to start planning for usage of the space. Now the Library Board is pushing hard for immediate approval of their plan. Some complain that the Jury is trying to stall the plan — an unreasonable response in the eyes of fiscal responsibility.

‘T-Day’ battle set Saturday at Tech

Jenkins is a sophomore quarterback who has been performing well during spring workouts, and Wheeler is a senior wideout who grabbed nine passes for 73 yards in a scrimmage last weekend.
“Everybody has told me that last year was the most exciting spring game they may have ever had here and, hopefully, we can make it just as exciting this time,” Dooley said. “I know our players are excited about the game and what’s on the line for however it turns out.”
To the winning team will go a steak dinner.
The losers will have to settle for hot dogs.
