Library programs on tap for January include something for the history buffs, music lovers and people-watchers:
• Beginning today, Louisiana Tech professors Stephen Webre and John Martin will conduct their six-week “Louisiana Characters: Biographies of the Bayou State” series. The program will consist of readings and discussions about five noteworthy Louisiana lives and will meet from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays.

Local group aids elderly

“We set up programs to make sure people are safe, to make sure they are educated on how to protect themselves against crimes and assist with other welfare concerns that they have in the home,” Emma Williams, Triad elder service deputy investigator, said.
On Wednesday, the Lincoln Parish Triad and Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together Council met for its monthly meeting in the Peach Suite in the Ruston Civic Center. One of the topics on the agenda was helping the elderly and disabled beat the cold this winter through the launch of Triad’s third annual blanket drive.

Jindal sworn in as governor

Today was declared a state holiday to allow state government employees to attend the ceremony — or to just avoid the office and alleviate the traffic in downtown Baton Rouge.
CBS sportscaster Tim Brando, who is from Shreveport, was slated to emcee the inauguration ceremony.
The West Monroe High School marching band will perform, Alexandria singer Mickey Mangun will sing the national anthem and fighter jets are to fly overhead after the singing of “God Bless America.”
Jindal will attend a luncheon with state lawmakers at the Baton Rouge River Center after the inauguration ceremonies.
