Oakes’ decision based on timing

“Things are on the upswing here and it’s far better to leave now than when things aren’t going good. Sometimes, you can just hang on too long. I think it’s the right time for me and my family.
“It’s a good time for me to explore different things and other challenges. I’m 51 years old. I want to see what else is out there It’s time for me to make a change in my life and for Louisiana Tech to have new leadership in athletics.”

Senior year can be productive

For a $20 enrollment fee, local students can earn more than 30 hours of college credit before ever setting foot on a university campus. With this program, students can get a feel for the challenges of college-level work and increase their self-esteem with the knowledge that they can be competitive at the post-secondary level.

It took Berg about three months to complete the oil painting of Reneau, which will be hung in the president’s office suite. The Biannual Faculty Art Exhibition runs through Feb. 12. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Vienna ready for expansion

With the recent work along U.S. 167, the Town of Vienna is looking toward the future with no qualms about expansion, as officials have been busy preparing the town for future economic progression.
Vienna Mayor Randy Graham said a new zoning ordinance was approved Jan. 8 in Vienna. Graham said town officials formed a zoning committee and worked out an ordinance, which applies to the development and construction of new homes and buildings.

McCown: Bucs’ future starter?

So much that McCown was recently labeled by Pro Football Weekly as “the quarterback of the future” for the franchise.
“Word out of Tampa is that backup Luke McCown is beginning to build a case that he could be the team’s quarterback of the future, though he’s far from any coronation,” noted the Riverwoods, Ill.-based publication. “We hear he has great potential and the Bucs like having Jeff Garcia, who is signed through 2008, to be his mentor.”

Fan-friendly Tech schedule ahead for ’08

By whatever name, fans of Louisiana Tech University’s football program will certainly be even more familiar with the famous institution located in West Point, N.Y., as the 2008 season draws closer.
The Bulldogs will play their first-ever game against a military institution when they meet the Black Knights at Michie Stadium located on the scenic Hudson River.
A date and kickoff time will be determined later for the game that will be televised; in either 2010 or 2013, Army will march into Ruston for a game against Tech at Joe Aillet Stadium.

Congratulations to leaders

Mays has a strong presence on the jury, one that is respected by both incoming and incumbent jurors alike. He has a previous presidency under his belt and gives thorough attention to the details of the work that he has been assigned. He is also one of a group of a few jurors who can be seen at committee meetings that they are not required to attend. And he’s a short guy, like me.

Mays named Jury president

“I trust I can do the job that all of you expect,” Mays said to an over-capacity crowd that spilled into the hall outside of the jury chambers. “This parish is very good; it’s at the top with a lot of things. I hope we can continue to do that.”
Joe Henderson was unanimously elected vice president of the jury.
Next on the list of things to do was nomination and selection of a parish administrator, which along with parish treasurer is one of two positions that the jury directly controls through nomination and voting.

Levingston has that title feeling

The defensive lineman/special unit performer is the third ex-Bearcat to help hold up the Waterford Crystal that is symbolic of the No. 1 team in the BCS series.
Hunt and Williams both played vital roles for the ’03 edition of the Bayou Bengals that captured the school’s second-ever national championship, the first one being the 1958 edition directed by Paul Dietzel.
