Henderson: a new challenge

But in terms of making the transition from former principal at Ruston High School to the commissioner’s seat for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, Henderson considers it as “continuing education.
“It’s an ongoing learning experience,” Henderson said during a recent interview held here with sportswriters from throughout the state at the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association convention.
“Any time you go into a different challenge or profession, it’s about learning things from those around you and those who have preceded you.

Give gift of school preparation

The poster, a take-off of DART’s Angel Tree program that calls for donations of Christmas gifts, contains a paper doll cutout that lists the needs of local children who are involved with DART. To maintain the children’s confidentiality, the cutouts are coded to correspond to the individual child. Donations can be made by claiming a paper doll and returning it to Curves, located at 975 Tech Drive Suite 7, and DART’s downtown office on Alabama Avenue.

You get what you give

A trip to Alpine Guest Care Center led me to meet Pete and Willa Peterson, a couple who periodically go to the center to bring treats for and visit with the center’s residents. Mrs. Peterson’s mother was once a guest at the center, but even since her passing, the Petersons still take it upon themselves to treat each of Alpine’s residents as a personal friend or family member. They bring gifts of cookies, cakes and other snacks, and provide comforting presents on Christmas.

RHS grad gains second star

“We’ve had a great run over the past couple of years,” Cartwright said to a crowd that included family, friends and co-workers. “Anytime Jack was ever given a mission, he completed it. He did that all over this country.”
Ramsaur said he was “very honored, blessed and humbled” by the promotion.
He ran through a laundry list of people who helped him reach his position as an Air Force major general. As he ran down the list, Ramsaur ran the gamut of emotions from laughter to near tears. He especially became emotional when speaking about his family.

T.J., Jordan: grand finales

Nicholson, as a senior pitcher for Ruston High, had a 7-5 record and 2.49 earned run average. Both of those marks are extra deceiving, the fact being that the righthander suffered five of those setbacks to top 10 Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association top 10 ranked opponents. But in District 1-5A action, he went 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA.
Such performances earned Brister and Nicholson two of the individual awards and a first unit slot on the annual All-Parish squad selected by The Daily Leader.
Brister was tabbed as the Hitter of the Year and Nicholson as the Pitcher of the Year.

CABL works to inform

But with term limits taking effect for the first time, a large portion of the House will be turned out, opening the door for a whole new group of legislators.
Granted, many of those leaving the House have already thrown their hats into the ring for the Senate or some other elected position, but there will still be a significant number of first-timers when the next legislative session opens.
In an effort to help voters make wise choices, CABL will send questionnaires to each candidate asking for their stance on specific issues.

Vitter, like others, failed us

Granted, none of us are perfect.
But Vitter led us to believe that if he was not perfect, he at least practiced what he preached.
While his first action was at least honorable — he admitted his mistake and said he had asked both his God and his wife for forgiveness — what followed was anything but honorable: he’s basically hid.
Sadly, Vitter’s actions are just another in a long line of failures by those in whom we’ve placed our trust.

CABL head hits ethics, finance

Erwin said CABL is more of an advocacy group.
“We have an affinity about what we think will work,” Erwin. “We are an action arm; we’re similar, yet separate in our mission.”
In speaking of the financial steps taken during the 2007 Legislative Session, Erwin said legislators had more money to spend than ever before.
“We might never have this much again, or at least for a long time,” Erwin said. “There was a lot of new money from recovery funds in New Orleans and higher oil prices.”
