Motorcade honors

Although the final destination of the national group is the Vietnam Memorial called The Wall, the ride is made in honor of all veterans from all wars.
Even though the riders did not leave the Interstate in Ruston, in some communities the riders participated in special ceremonies with veterans and civic organizations, visits to war memorials, visits with VA hospital patients and many other planned stops.
Over the years the event has grown and last year included thousands of bikers nationwide.

Speech season offers advice

I would like to credit the Louisiana Tech University News Bureau and Daily Leader intern Morgan Tarpley for the background data and on site impressions.
With Bernhard at the helm, The Shaw Group has grown through a number of acquisitions to have $5 billion in revenues since its inception in 1987. The company has been named three times to the Fortune 500 list and is one of the youngest companies to appear there.
It has also been twice recognized as one of the magazine’s “Most Admired Companies.”

Regents grant Tech $3.6 M

“This competitively-awarded grant speaks volumes about the quality of faculty at Louisiana Tech, as well as the depth of the university’s research capacity,” said Bob Levy, Board of Regents member, who chairs the Sponsored Programs Committee. “I look forward to the center’s development and to its positive impact on both the state and our nation.”
Tech will receive $3.6 million for a project that will be coordinated with Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge, but Vir Phoha, a professor of computer science at Tech, is principal investigator.

’Dogs start WAC tourney play

“Our goal when the season began was to make it to a postseason NCAA regional and the only way we’re going to do it is by winning the conference tournament. That’s the situation for all of us in the WAC. Unless you win the tournament, you’re not going to be making it.”
The Bulldogs (35-22, 14-10) will begin their mission towards that objective this evening with a 5 p.m. (CDT) game against San Jose State (32-24, 11-13) in the first round of the four-day tourney that will conclude with a championship game on Sunday.

Wanted: Tough companion

But for policemen such as Dubach Police Chief Russell Croxton, saying “No thanks” to an intimidating situation is not in the job description.
Since there are only two policemen in Dubach who must rotate shifts, one man can find himself working alone, left with nothing but a “tough guy” facial expression to control a domestic violence situation or a temperamental speeder who grows angry after being pulled over.
For this reason, along with the need to get a handle on the narcotics situation, there has been some discussion in Dubach about obtaining a canine to accompany Croxton.

Start child’s education at early age

LA 4 is designed primarily to target “at risk” students, or those who are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and has been shown to have significant effects on the academic success of participants that follows them after they leave the program. Although Lincoln Parish has applied for a grant so an LA 4 program can be started at Simsboro School, they have yet to receive final approval. However, there are several other pre-k programs in Lincoln Parish available to students.

Former Tech president unlocks history

“In April 1961, he began writing his diary and kept it until the last day of the Civil War. This soldier was very intelligent and wanted to serve in the infantry.”
Taylor said he obtained the materials by pure chance. While at Louisiana College and serving as the president of a historical society, Patrick’ neice approached Taylor and told him of the documents she had.

Tech among title contenders

Ditto for the University of Nevada, which is serving as the tournament host and finished with the seond best conference record.
And then there is suddenly host San Jose State and always pesky Hawaii.
Sacramento State, in its first official season as a WAC member, has aspirations of being the “sleeper”, capable of shocking some of the favorites.
Whatever, it should make for an interesting four days of action at Peccole Park on the campus of the Wolf Pack, starting with Thursday’s first round that features three games.

Truancy sows seeds for trouble

Students in both Lincoln and Union parish schools are referred to TASC after five unexcused absences, and a risk assessment is performed for each child — leading to a designation of low, medium or high risk.
An emphasis is placed on determining whether the reason for the child’s absence is criminal or social. Officials said many times a child misses school for reasons beyond the family’s control, such as financial or transportation problems. If a need is determined, TASC can refer the family to local agencies that can provide assistance such as utility assistance or tutoring.
