Tech spring game: perfect script

Just as Derek Dooley told a dejected honorary head coach for the Blue team as he sprinted off of the Joe Aillet Stadium FieldTurf and towards the Bulldogs’ locker room, the annual Louisiana Tech University spring showdown couldn’t have been scripted much better on Saturday afternoon.
A Madison Avenue p.r. executive couldn’t have penned a better ending to this “bragging rights” meeting that matched up the White team against the Blues.

Club needs local support

Last week the club celebrated Boys and Girls Club Week as a way to raise awareness within the city about the club and give the children the opportunity to celebrate.
“Every club celebrates Boys and Girls Club Week,” Jimmy Williams, unit director, said. “It’s just a time to boost awareness, get all the club kids talking about the club at the school playground and get parents talking about it when they go to work.”

Violence hurts everyone

If the above statistics from the RADAR Media and CDC Sexual Violence Fact Sheets and the National Domestic Violence Hotline startled you when you read them, that’s good.
It’s good that they affected you because the numbers represent actual citizens who have been raped, assaulted or otherwise abused.
The most important thing to remember is that though the “victim” or “survivor” of these heinous acts takes the brunt of the abuse, violence of any kind affects us all.

Parents play role in prevention

Almost five years after the life-changing incident, Russell presented his story Thursday night before a small crowd of parents and teens at Dubach High School.
“I was living a double life while in high school,” Russell said. “I was a Christian on Sunday through Thursday.”
Russell was the guest speaker at an underage drinking awareness meeting aimed at parents presented by the Dubach High School Parent-Teacher Association in partnership with the North Central Alliance Partners in Prevention, Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

White: high ‘steaks’ win

In a spring-ending game for Louisiana Tech University that had a finish worthy of ESPN’s SportsCenter, the White team sneaked past the Blue 28-27 on a clear, sunny Saturday afternoon at Joe Aillet Stadium.
A 23-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt quarterback Ross Jenkins to junior wide receiver Josh Wheeler with only 28 seconds remaining to be played tied the score at 27-27 and then placekicker Danny Horwedel booted through the conversion point for the winning differential.
Those scores capped off an amazing comeback by the White, who trailed 24-7 going into the final quarter.

Students have no use for firearms at school

Ditto for Jim Doe and his 9 mm handgun. There are no handgun ranges on the Louisiana Tech University or Grambling State University campuses so there is no reason to keep a handgun in your dorm room or your vehicle.
I’m sure there will be well-meaning souls who see this as a Second Amendment issue. It’s not — no more so than prohibiting guns in banks, hospitals or on elementary and high school campuses is considered a violation of a person’s right to bear arms. There is no valid reason for a student to possess a firearm on a college campus — period.

Stop the cycle of shootings

Into this mix strode Charles Whitman. The 25-year-old climbed to the observation deck of the University of Texas Tower and began shooting indiscriminately with a rifle. When the 96-minute shooting spree was finished, 16 people lay dead and another 31 wounded. While the first shot from the tower was fired just before noon, the killing actually began earlier in the day when Whitman stabbed his wife to death in their Austin home, then went to his mother’s house and killed her.

Changes splash in for Tech center

In return, five major construction projects will take place in the next two and a half years:
• Three new swimming pools — one for sunning and playing around, a 25 meter warming pool and an Olympic size (50 meter) pool with competition level diving equipment — will be built.
• Tech’s tennis courts will be replaced with new ones.
• The health center will be moved and now have a place for students to find out any information, advice and basic medical care.
