Ruston, Tech growing in opportunities

Five north Louisiana residents recently chosen as the Distinguished Alumni of Tech’s College of Engineering and Science, and that shows that wonderful opportunities are available — and they’re growing.
With plans in the works for a research park, perhaps this will give some of Tech’s engineering graduates more reason to stay in Ruston. In their college years, they spend five or more years in this city, and in that time, we hope they feel like family by graduation day.

Community giving supports all

Saturday’s Heart Walk is free to anyone who wants to participate. Yes, it is a fund-raiser, but it’s also a way to generate awareness about healthy hearts. Walking is a great way to exercise and a great way to maintain your heart.
The walk itself is about 2.7 miles and will take place at Louisiana Tech University’s Thomas Assembly Center — rain or shine. If you feel like you can’t walk 2.7 miles, don’t sweat it; walk what you can and then rest. A little bit of exercise is better than none at all.

Man arrested for carrying gun, machete

Jefferson was located in Harper’s parking lot, and after refusing verbal requests from officers to stop, the officers tried to physically subdue him.
He broke free and ran across campus. He was located at Hale Hall, where a second struggle ensued.
After being arrested, Jefferson was transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and booked on charges of resisting an officer, battery of a police officer and carrying a dangerous weapon on campus.
“I don’t want to speculate (why he was on campus carrying weapons),” Quinnelly said.

Police seize half a ton of marijuana

Hernandez was taken to Troop F headquarters for further questioning and later booked into the LPDC on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Bond has been set at $250,000.
In a separate incident, a Ruston man was arrested on Saturday after he was caught breaking into a car by the vehicle’s owner, booking records indicate.

Underage drinking affects us all

Those at the meeting also wanted to dispel inaccurate perceptions of alcohol use among youth.
Tommy Grafton, director of Project Northland and the Partners in Prevention Coalition, said alcohol use is more prevalent among even younger students than some parents realize.
“We start at the sixth grade level with a no use message,” he said. “We’re dealing with an age-old issue. Some people come to meetings and tell (us) there’s no way sixth-graders are drinking on a regular basis. I tell them ‘Yes they are and they’re getting it from your cabinet.’”

The Tech Talk was my life

“So, you can put ‘on’ before a date now?” Lydia inquired looking over my shoulder as I typed.
Then I was embarrassed.
Suddenly I could remember being in the Tech Talk office pointing at the style hints that clearly guided against it. I don’t think I have to go into detail about how it feels to have someone notice a mistake you taught him or her never to make. I didn’t blame her; I blamed myself and the other editors who had drilled these rules into the reporters.
And next came envy.

Residents to have heart with walk

“I believe in the Heart Walk and what the American Heart Association is doing,” he said. “Our son doesn’t have the left two chambers of his heart. He’s undergone three heart surgeries ... I know the cost of heart disease. I know what it does not only to an individual but also to a family.”
Pullen’s father and brother both died from heart attacks, he said, and Britton will most likely need more surgeries in the future.

Rike’s homer is winner

This one resulted after Tech (8-3) appeared on the verge of having a six-game winning streak end, the Bulldogs behind 8-1 through six innings.
But four runs in the seventh and then seven in the eighth forced McNeese into a must score or else situation in the ninth, the Cowboys (0-6) responding with a three-run charge fueled by a three-run double by designated hitter Joe Hulett.
Rike, however, took center stage in the Bulldogs’ half of the inning.

Millsap is ‘hidden gem’ for Jazz

“But I don’t want to make a habit of it. I’m not that type of player. I like to run sets and plays. I’m used to playing help defense. This game there was neither rhyme nor reason to it.
“But I’m glad I was out here playing with these guys.”
Just making it to this point —being selected as one of the 10 best first year men to represent the NBA— was frankly something Paul
Millsap said he had no reason to expect when the season got underway.

Generosity an area staple

Additionally, area residents continue to show their concern for those who reside in Lincoln Parish by their support of the Habitat for Humanity program. Habitat makes home ownership possible for people who would not be able to afford the cost of a house on their own. A fund-raiser for Habitat begun last week by The Ruston Daily Leader has already generated more than $3,500 — almost halfway to the goal of $10,000.
Finally, the community continues to support those who lost everything to Hurricane Katrina — especially those in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward.
