Tech hoops: ‘New’ season begins

Tech’s men are at home for a 7 p.m. start at the Thomas Assembly Center, while the women trek into San Jose for a 10 p.m. (CDT) contest.
Figure on both Tech teams more than welcoming a different kind of competition, given that the men have dropped four straight games to non-WAC affiliated foes and the women are coming off of a 61-44 setback to LSU of the Southeastern Conference.
The Lady Techsters will go into their league slate as the favorite to repeat as champions. San Jose State is being forecasted to wind up around the No. 6 position among conference members.

Smoking law lights up opportunity

Although this new law could initially arouse disappointment in smokers, it could also present a prime opportunity to permanently squash out a long-held addiction.
According to the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org), smoking results in more than 400,000 deaths each year, and smokers are two-to-three times more likely to die from coronary heart disease than nonsmokers. Smoking might also decrease fertility, increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis and has been linked to hearing loss and vision problems.

Health involves hunger, happiness

We don’t know. Although I think he consumes way too much meat, he’s more aware of his exercise and diet than most people I have encountered. You see, the thing is that some people, regardless of self-care, will still develop some health problems. Genetic makeup and even environmental factors a person is exposed to at a young age can plant the seeds for failing health. My best friend’s brother has Lupus, a chronic disease where the immune system attacks normal tissue. Diagnosed as a teenager, he was not expected to live past 18.

Lincoln Parish school bus overturns

Harris said the number and ages of students transported by ambulance were as follows: two 12-year-olds, three 14-year-olds, three 15-year-olds and one 17-year-old.
“There appeared to be moderate injuries to some, mainly lacerations,” Harris said. “The rest mainly complained about back and neck injuries.”
Lincoln Parish Schools Superintendent Danny Bell, speaking from Lincoln General Hospital, said the accident is still under investigation by Louisiana State Police.
“It appears none of the injuries are serious,” Bell said.
