Tech, GSU: coaching carousel

Tech had its man in place by the end of 2006, naming former LSU and Miami Dolphins’ assistant Derek Dooley shortly before the Christmas holidays.
Grambling State hopes to have a successor to Spears in place by mid-January.
The exit of Bicknell and Spears and arrival of Dooley—call it the Coaching Carousel, has been selected by The Daily Leader as the Sports Story of the Year for the parish, albeit the sideline carousel occurring at the so-called 11th Hour (or 12th and final month) after there were plenty of other deserving candidate of such kudos.

Parish should present a clean face

Next year promises even more with the completion of the hotels, the possibility of another hotel and a new Applebees in the I-20 Shopping Center.
Additionally, there’s a new shopping center under construction between the North Service Road and the theater, along with plans for another shopping center — including new dining spots — on Tech Drive.

Smoking ban a win-win situation

All of that will only enhance the experience smokers and non-smokers have while dining and protect them from this bad habit and potential health problems that have been known to result from smoking.
Everyone knows that smoking has been linked to lung, throat and various other cancers. A pregnant smoker is often urged to quit because of the damage it could do to her baby and herself. Everyone knows that smoking is dangerous; that’s probably why the ban was created in the first place.

Parish catches 2006 winds of change

By having the employees contribute to the cost of their premiums and jurors and retirees pay their own, the Jury acted on one of the recommendations made by an insurance industry consultant, and saved taxpayers more than $100,000.
There is more work to be done, but at least a start was made toward true insurance reform.
• Economic growth.

Millsap: ‘Mr. Rebound’ in 2006

He went out in style, becoming the first and only player in NCAA history to lead the country in board work for three consecutive years, averaging 12.7 per game and also working in an average of 19.6 points.
A first team All-Western Athletic Conference choice and included on several All-American teams, Millsap completed a three-year college stint that featured double digit productions each season for both scoring and rebounding.

Diet results in swinging from the ceiling

Here are a few of the diets my ample physique has suffered through:
• The banana diet. I ate so many bananas I developed a desire to hang upside down in a tree while eating. When I started picking through my wife Susan’s hair at a movie one night, she quickly nixed that diet.
• The water diet. Did you know that you can actually drink too much water? You can. I nearly made myself sick, not to mention the plethora of trips to the bathroom.

Dodge New Year’s dangers

While the heavy rains of Friday and Saturday have diminished the chance of fire from wayward fireworks, there is still a danger — personal injury.
Each year many people are maimed or killed by the misuse of fireworks. When you mix miniature bombs with alcohol, you’ve created a recipe for disaster. All it takes is a moments distraction for catastrophe to occur.
Likewise, alcohol figures into the mix of another calamity that occurs too often on holidays — drunk driving, compounded by fatality traffic accidents.

Ringing in new year with DWI checks

“This is something that we plan on doing periodically throughout the year, but this may be the last time we tell people we’re planning it,” he said. “Next time, there might not be a heads-up. I think it’s appropriate with the new year coming to get everyone to pledge that they are going to be more cautious on the roadways.”
Stone also advised caution to those attending New Year’s Eve festivities, as DWI checkpoints are planned.
