Support active jury president

An even better way to make sure petty party politics are set aside and a president is chosen based on that person’s ability to lead would be for residents — voters — to show up at Tuesday’s meeting and make their opinions known.
There is nothing like a little peer pressure from a juror’s constituents to grab their attention and make sure they base their vote on what’s best for those they represent.

Just one last Christmas story

Christmas was always a great time. I remember getting a book, “Bill Stern’s Favorite Football Stories,” from Aunt Mary’s crew. I still have the book today and will occasionally open the dog-eared pages and enjoy an afternoon of great tales.
Another gift I remember came from Uncle Al’s bunch — a year-long subscription to Sports Illustrated. I also remember that as I anxiously awaited the arrival of my first-ever swimsuit issue, Mom beat me to the mailbox and tossed it. She said there would be none of that smut in her house.

Parish trash megasite on hold

At its November meeting, the Jury voted to hold off on creating more than one megasite until it was determined how much it would cost to build the sites and what the public’s response was to the consolidation. The first site was built on land already owned by the Police Jury.
At its December meeting, the Lincoln Parish Police Jury voted to close sites at 10 locations in the vicinity of Louisiana 822 and Louisiana 33, and move the 25 dumpsters to the megasite, located on Pylant Road.
The 10 locations to be closed and the number of dumpsters at each site include:

’Dogs: super start in WAC

“What we stressed all week was that this was going to be energy week,” Richard said. “We were going to go out and play hard, give it all we’ve got and leave everything out there. And it started on Monday in practice after we put the loss (80-52) to Arkansas and our other non-conference games behind us.
“The way we played tonight, this is how I envisioned we could be as a team. Play tough on defense, have balanced scoring and play hard from start to finish. We did that tonight. This is something we can build on.”
The completeness of Tech’s performance was evident across the board.

Remember the Garretts

Its long range goal is to continue the legacy which the family left for all of those who will follow. The life-long respect of their athletes and English students has been passed from generation to generation and the support of the Garrett Foundation will make that a continuing process as the years pass.
Over the decade since the creation of the Garrett Foundation, a number of projects have been completed at Ruston High School.

It’s that time of year again

Similarly, trying to improve your future is directly dependent on improving your present one day — make that one moment — at a time.
So, here we go.
I should begin by repeating the resolutions which are holdovers from past years. I am prevented from doing that not because determinations to lose weight have been successfully accomplished, but rather because The Ruston Daily Leader editor Chuck Cannon has already written an absolutely hysterical column about the various diets he has tried.

Two arrested for burglaries

The pair’s current counts are related to the burglaries of Lincoln Timber Company, Lawery’s and a James Construction Company office trailer. Harris said all locations are either in or near Dubach.
“We have recovered several thousand dollars worth of tools, copper wire and construction materials,” he said. “Our copper thefts have gone up in the last year because the cost of copper has gone up. We’ve even seen people climb under houses and cut out the plumbing.”

Tech hoops: ‘New’ season begins

Tech’s men are at home for a 7 p.m. start at the Thomas Assembly Center, while the women trek into San Jose for a 10 p.m. (CDT) contest.
Figure on both Tech teams more than welcoming a different kind of competition, given that the men have dropped four straight games to non-WAC affiliated foes and the women are coming off of a 61-44 setback to LSU of the Southeastern Conference.
The Lady Techsters will go into their league slate as the favorite to repeat as champions. San Jose State is being forecasted to wind up around the No. 6 position among conference members.

Smoking law lights up opportunity

Although this new law could initially arouse disappointment in smokers, it could also present a prime opportunity to permanently squash out a long-held addiction.
According to the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org), smoking results in more than 400,000 deaths each year, and smokers are two-to-three times more likely to die from coronary heart disease than nonsmokers. Smoking might also decrease fertility, increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis and has been linked to hearing loss and vision problems.

Health involves hunger, happiness

We don’t know. Although I think he consumes way too much meat, he’s more aware of his exercise and diet than most people I have encountered. You see, the thing is that some people, regardless of self-care, will still develop some health problems. Genetic makeup and even environmental factors a person is exposed to at a young age can plant the seeds for failing health. My best friend’s brother has Lupus, a chronic disease where the immune system attacks normal tissue. Diagnosed as a teenager, he was not expected to live past 18.
