Terry does his duty

While many young men and women have that same dream, those dreams are often put on a well-hidden shelf during a time of war. When that war is unpopular — such as the current hostilities in Iraq — and we are daily bombarded with stories about how the enemy not only wants us dead, but also wants to desecrate the bodies of those they’ve killed, those dreams are usually completely buried.

Accidents spark a memory

I can vividly imagine this situation because one day about 14 years ago, the family, shaken and stranded on the shoulder of I-20, was mine.
We had just finished loading up Mom’s old Buick with the last of our belongings at our old house in Haughton, and Mom, her boyfriend, my sisters and I were on our way to a new house in Shreveport.
My sisters and I were giggling and straining to talk to each other over the blaring radio.

War of words erupts over FEMA funding

The letter said the latest numbers available show FEMA has obligated more than $4.5 billion to the state for reimbursements to parish and local entities for both Katrina and Rita.
“However, the state of Louisiana has only released $2 billion to the local entities, only 44 percent of the money from FEMA released to the state to pass on the parishes and local governments,” the letter read. “These numbers are shocking.”

It was the most complete, impressive showing turned in by a Techsters’ squad that has reached the .500 winning percentage level for the first time this season.
“I’m just happy for our players,” sized up Long, who was approved for a one-year contarct extension by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana Systems on Friday. “They have continued to work hard when they could have easily shut it down and hung their heads.

Troop situation calls for more than complaints

I’ve tried to live by that rule. Whenever problems have popped up, I’ve tried to offer a solution when making my report. There have been times that my boss would tell me I acted too rashly with some of my suggestions, and there were times that he just disagreed with them. There were also times he went with my solution.
Today, our country faces one of the biggest problems of this generation — what to do about the war in Iraq. Each day the number of protestors grows.

Politicians need to work as a team

Blanco, a Democrat, countered by saying it’s the fault of federal bureaucracy — specifically on the part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She said Louisiana must follow the strict guidelines required by the federal reimbursement process, yet due to the magnitude of both hurricanes, FEMA brought in large numbers of under-trained and under-qualified personnel to prepare project worksheets. Blanco said Vitter could help by asking the federal government to ease its restrictions.
If one looks closely, they would most likely see it is a combination of both that has been the problem.

Kazakhstan team arrives at Tech

“We have the potential to be dominant factors in the international realm in both our economy and our education system. But we have to train our specialists to be recognized in the world market, and we are making the connections we need all over the world to do that.”
Piven said that few people realize that Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world. One of the reasons for such a bright future for the republic is its rich resources in oil, gas and metallurgy. It is well known as one of the best universities among all of the republics of the former Soviet Union.

Techsters play host to FSU

So, with Fresno State (11-7, 4-1) coming in here Saturday for a 7 p.m. league duel, it will be all about starting up another victory streak at home, a la the 114-game string that was in place before Boise State pulled off a 68-47 stunner on Jan. 13.
“We can’t afford anymore conference losses,” said senior guard Shan Moore. “We don’t plan on losing again. We have to play together as a team, be focused and play with a lot of energy every time we go out on the court.

St. Jude aid pulled through the airways

It is only through the financial generosity of all types of supporters that the hospital is able to treat children from many nations who have been sent to St. Jude by doctors who know their toughest cases will get the best treatment there.
No patients and their families are asked to pay for treatment beyond what their insurance policies will cover. Those without insurance are never asked to pay at all.

What are the keys to success?

Here they are. See if you agree.
•Passion: The most important factor. If you love what you do, it will be so much easier to embrace the other seven factors.
•Work: Like it or not, it’s a competitive world, and working hard can give you and edge.
•Focus: Focus is all about specializing in something and becoming an expert at it, which means staying focused on that one thing for months, years or even decades.
