Bike project is a gift for all involved

The DWCC Lifers Association will spruce up the donated bikes, then give them to the Boys and Girls Club so local children can enjoy them. It’s one of many charitable causes the association has undertaken.
Fisher-Giorlando explained that the prisoners do this work because they hope to keep kids from going down the wrong path.

Literacy changed my life

My family and I are stronger because of this program, and I know in my heart I will succeed in the career I have chosen. The teachers have helped me so much. I would never have been able to pass my test without them. They are an inspiration to all of us. The Family Literacy program has changed my life by helping me further my education, helping me understand my family and giving us a better future. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend the Lincoln Parish Even Start Family Literacy program.

Derailed train closes U.S. 80

The Red Cross has set up shelters for evacuated families at Choudrant’s Family Life Center and at First Baptist Church in Calhoun, Sanderson said.
Stone estimated it will take at least 48 hours to clear the tracks and the roadway, and he said evacuated residents will not be allowed to return to their homes until the area is cleared and secured.

Avoiding bumps in the road

A chunk of both the City Council and Police Jury’s time has been spent considering road overlay and expansion projects, and the results are taking shape around us — albeit slowly.
The inconvenience of traveling to Wal-Mart caused by the I-20 service road project has at least partially abated with the opening of the west entrance to the store earlier this year.
Also, a new connector now opens a path from the area behind Wal-Mart out to La. 33.

Head off gifting anxiety

With all of the cooking, decorating and partying going on, it’s hard to imagine time to pick out a most desired gift for each member of your inner circle. During this time of gift-giving, our families can seem over-abundant with good little boys and girls, and shopping for our friends can become an unexpected source of the holiday blues. City departments find common ground

The construction of two more buildings is planned in the next few years — one for a warehouse and one to house the Light and Power Department.
“We’ve been working on this since 2004, and now we’re in the building process,” Love said. “The idea is to consolidate all of these into one location over time. It will be easier if they are all managed together and grow together instead of being separated.”
Equipment sharing is already being practiced among the departments, and many projects involve a collaboration of the various types of expertise.

Creek team sparks pride

The team has much to be proud of, and they’ve given Ruston much to be proud of. This group of guys has shown their heart out on the field and in their everyday activities. The community noticed, and they turned out in force to show their Creek pride on Friday night.
Driving on Interstate 20 from Ruston to Monroe on Friday afternoon, I passed handmade banners of support for the Cougars. As I got closer to Ouachita Christian School, the number of signs increased, and there was no doubt about the fan support the Cougars
would have at the game.

Community’s protection is up to all of us

That’s reassuring news for Ruston residents, many of whom loaded up this weekend with Christmas gifts and other valuables.
Our community should take pride in the police officers and investigators who have worked to find the culprits in these crimes. Because our city is so safe, this series of armed robberies has put many of us on edge.
Two of the recent robberies happened at convenience stores, and three local residences have been struck.

RJHS soccer program blooming

An integral part of the local soccer scene in Ruston for many years, Acosta was ready to see the sport explode at RJHS.
“Soccer is a unique sport to this part of the world because of how it’s played,” Acosta explains. “Most popular sports here all key on the upper body. Look at football, baseball, and even basketball. These sports are very “arm” oriented. But not soccer.
