Board elections are on our heels

Ten out of 12 current school board members have expressed a desire to run for re-election. They include Mattie Harrison, District 1; Flynn Ludley, District 2; Curtis Dowling, District 3; Jim Kessler, District 5; Joe Mitcham, District 6; Lisa Best, District 8; Lynda Henderson, District 9; Otha Anders; District 10; George Mack; District 11; and Ted McKinney, District 12.
Robert Shadoin, District 7, could not be reached to verify whether he would seek re-election, and District 4 Representative Jo Tatum does not plan to run.

Cats to have double ‘jam’ action

One night later, it’s a 30-mile trek down I-20 to meet up with the Rebels in varsity jamboree action to be held at Malone Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe; approximate starting time for the latter game will be 8 p.m.
Up until Tuesday afternoon, plans had called for the freshmen and jayvees to meet on the 24th, but other obligations by WMHS resulted in a move to the 25th.
Admission to the frosh-jayvee contest to be staged in Ruston is $5.

Speeding is silent killer

Speeding is not only against the law, but is also dangerous to drivers and all other motorists who share the road with them.
According to state statistics, almost one third of people killed on the highways were involved in speed-related crashes. This means that an estimated 217 people were killed in Louisiana in 2004 in crashes where speed was a factor. Nationally, more than 13,000 people died in 2004 in similar cases.

Summer heat still blazing

And most of them were right around my age group. (You didn’t think I was really going to reveal my age, now did you?)
I’ve been lucky so far to escape a ticket, extremely lucky considering my penchant for speeding.
I don’t know why, but I always feel like I’m in a hurry to get wherever I’m going, which is probably amplified by the fact that I often leave too late for my destination and inevitably get lost.

Driver injured after rolling 18-wheeler

Gay was injured when he lost control of his 18-wheeler Monday morning while rounding a curve just south of Fellowship Baptist Church on Louisiana 507. Firefighter Lance Otwell carries a back board, while Andy Futrell prepares to assist. Gay, 52, of Natchitoches, was taken to Lincoln General Hospital with undetermined injuries. Deputy Tommy Doss said it appeared Gay was driving too fast while negotiating the curve.
