Start planning your wedding now

• Announce the engagement. Some like to have a party to announce their engagement to family and friends, others choose to submit a photo and information to their local newspapers.
• Set the wedding date. Summer months are ideal for weddings and perfect for vacations and honeymoons, so with enough warning, guests should be able to get time off of work to attend.
• Make a budget. I once read an article where it said 32 percent of couples foot the bill for the wedding themselves. Decide who will pay for what before the costs start piling up.

Exercise your right to vote

Many times it seems that once a list of candidates has been voted in and begun their work, a majority of voters begin to complain that those elected seem out of touch with their constituents.
However, once those constituents are asked how they voted, the reply is often “I didn’t vote, so you can’t blame me.”
We would like to issue a challenge to the residents — the voters — of Lincoln Parish.
We urge you to study the candidates you will be asked to choose from. Visit with them and ask them questions about how they think government should be run.

Big League club gave it best shot

“The West team from Thousand Oaks, Calf., was a very solid team and had outstanding pitching,” Parkman said.
“We were very proud of our team and of our team’s parents for their support. Other than the host team, South Carolina, we had more fans at the games than any other state or country.”
The U.S. Southwest squad was joined by Michigan, Germany, Panama and host South Carolina in “Pool B”, where only the latter club had more wins than Parkman’s group.
Comprising the “Pool A” were Puerto Rico, Florida, Delaware, Guam, Fraser Valley of South Carolina and Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Hollingsworth will stay on as mayor

“I am humbly asking for your consideration for re-election as your mayor because our city has made tremendous progress these past seven and a half years, and the future looks bright for continued growth and improvement,” he said. “We have a large number of projects in various stages of completion or design that I want to finish. We are also working on long-term plans for our city’s future. We feel the best is yet to come.”
He added the city’s close proximity to a university also brought added growth to the city.

Qualifying over; the races are on

“I’ll still do what I’ve always done. I’m going to tackle the issues and do what I can to move the city forward,” Hollingsworth said. “I’m looking forward to doing what I can do and doing it the best that I can.”
In Choudrant, incumbent Mayor Bill Sanderson will run against Williard Sullivan Sr. and former Choudrant Alderman Jimmy McGrew in the Sept. 30 election.
Drew Spillers, Danny M. Austin, John Emory Jr., Geraline “Skip” Morrison, Mark Gaston, John O’Neal and Choudrant Alderman Reagan Aswell will all run for the three open positions of alderman on Choudrant’s council.

Tech: who’s next for hall?

That’s the cutoff date for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to receive nominations for the highest honor available to an individual who has contributed to the athletic program.
There are currently 68 members in the Tech hall that was created in 1984 with the induction of six charter members and a purpose of recognizing those individuals who have contributed to the school’s long-standing tradition in athletics.
Athletes, coaches, administrators and benefactors have been honored for their contributions.

Responsibility starts at home

Now I don’t claim to be a rocket scientist, but I think I have a solution to the majority of our problems: we all need to accept responsibility for our actions.
I realize that might sound a bit simplistic, but think about it. What if everyone accepted responsibility for their actions?
An obvious benefit would be a reduction in the crime rate. If you have to accept responsibility for what you do, odds are you aren’t going to do something that would get you in trouble and send you to jail.
