Service Road speed limit

We read those words in every press released issued by the Louisiana State Police when they announce the number of fatality traffic accidents they’ve worked.
Speed kills.
Once again, it appears speed was a factor in the death of another Ruston resident on the South Interstate 20 Service Road that runs between Tarbutton Road and Cooktown Road.
The speed limit on that stretch of road — a stretch that includes businesses, restaurants, homes and a church — as well as blind hills and curves, is 55 miles per hour.

Tour artists are courageous

They are where they should be. In a box crammed somewhere between my sister’s “Unsatisfactory” kindergarten report cards and other embarrassing childhood trinkets that once belonged to my siblings and me. My favorite is a painting I did when I was four. It is clear that I leaned more toward the abstract as my paint-by-number My Little Ponies looked a little like something out of “Alice in Wonderland.”

Art Tour paints picture of excitement

Inside the Frothy Monkey Coffeehouse, the women admired the more than 20 paintings on display by Glen Kennedy.
“We know him and think he’s a wonderful artist,” said Pratt, as she studied Kennedy’s floral, still life and landscape paintings.
“He has so many different styles, and all of them are interesting.”
Steckline, a professor at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, said she has attended the art tour every year since it began.
“It’s always fun to go around and see what’s on display,” she said. “I love to see what Glen Kennedy is up to.”

Amendments 7,8 require our attention

Information provided by the Legislative Auditor’s Office conservatively estimates that roughly $574,000 would be saved simply by eliminating six assessors’ salaries and expense accounts.
Additional savings likely would occur from cutting expenses related to duplicate staff positions, health care and retirement benefits.
Those who favor consolidating the positions point out the current system allows for differences in assessments based on which assessor is assessing the property.
The result is property in close proximity is often assessed at different values.

Ruston perfect spot from which to start and end

Since my wife Susan and I moved to this area a little more than two years ago, we’ve learned that Lincoln Parish is a great place to begin one-day trips.
If you consider 300 miles about the limit for a one-day excursion, here are some of your options.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area.
This area is filled with more things you could do in your entire life. Since we’ve lived here, we’ve made the trip west to watch the Texas Rangers play baseball and Eric Clapton and friends play their guitars.

’Dogs outlast Mean Green

A week after losing 44-10 to San Jose State in Western Athletic Conference action, Tech held on to take the victory over the Mean Green (2-7) before an estimated 11,000 fans at Fouts Field.
Early on, it appeared as if the Bulldogs would have little trouble winning, as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead on three touchdown passes from Champion.
But the Mean Green rallied back to tie the score and then go ahead 24-21 at halftime on a 33-yard field goal by placekicker Matt Phillips.

It’s time to fill the bags

This Saturday the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will cover the community distributing large grocery bags.
The key is that the grocery bags will be left door to door around area neighborhoods completely empty.
In the week that follows, the Scouts are asking that residents fill the bags with canned goods or other non perishable foodstuffs and on Nov. 11 put those back outside the doors where the empty bags were left.
