As I scanned the AP wire every day, it seems like the days just got worse and worse. Students held hostage in Colorado, and one girl was killed. Florida deputy slain; manhunt for the killer ends with his own death. Brother-in-law of the new judge in Saddam Hussein’s trial is murdered by gunfire.

Every election vote counts

We, as a people who live in this society where we have a freedom to vote, should not take this opportunity and responsibility lightly. When our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, only white men could vote. Women and African Americans had to wait more than 100 years later before they received that same right.

Bulldogs: Boise is next obstacle

And to think that Utah, the alma mater of 2005 No. 1 NFL draftee Alex Smith, was supposedly the toughest assignment of the season for Boise State.
Now 5-0 and up to No. 20 in the latest Associated Press national poll announced on Monday, the Broncos scored 33 straight points and forced five turnovers en route to handing the Utes their worst home loss in 17 years.
Tech, whose lone win so far has been a 31-21 home nod over Division 1-AA Nicholls State, must hope to catch the Broncos napping on their famous blue turf this weekend.

Intersection hot topic with city council

Mayfield said while he did not mind the city spending the money necessary, he felt it could have gone to other projects.
“My biggest problem is having the city spend $55,000 to upgrade a community that is already high prestige,” Mayfield said. “I can give you 101 spaces that are far, far worse off. This could probably be well spent in another area.”
Alderman Jim Pearce disagreed.

Child pulled from well not badly injured

Jerry Lewis, chief public education officer for the Ruston Fire Department Ambulance, said EMTs checked Madaffri out on the scene before putting him on Pafford AirOne for precautionary measures.
“He was complaining that his back was hurting,” Lewis said.
