Finding that glimmer of hope

With all of the darkness that has spread across our news stations and radios, even the front page of this paper, I’ve struggled to find a little bit of light.
Last Wednesday afternoon, I found that glimmer of hope during the Lincoln Parish Library Control Board meeting.
I know, it’s weird, right. Stay with me, I promise it gets better.
LPL Director Vivian McCain stated that 856 children — not including teens or adults — have signed up to participate in the library’s summer reading program.

Burroughs takes over Diamond ’Dogs

Former Northwestern State coach Lane Burroughs officially took over Louisiana Tech’s baseball program Wednesday at a press conference Wednesday at the Davision Athletics Complex, saying he won’t make major changes to a team that last month reached the NCAA Regionals for the first time in 29 years.

The 2016 Diamond ’Dogs were considered a group of overachievers, something that Burroughs called himself during the press conference.

Peach Fest Rodeo begins Friday

The 27th annual Louisiana Peach Festival Rodeo sponsored by Brennan Dodge will be held starting at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Ruston Expo Center on Louisiana Highway 33 North. Gates will open at 6 p.m. both nights. This year’s rodeo will include a calf scramble and barrell racing for local children. Rodeo Clown Al Bryan will be on hand as well as trick rider Stormy Givens. Tech sends 5 to compete for Miss Louisiana title

Five Louisiana Tech University students will be among the 32 women who will compete this week for the title of Miss Louisiana 2016.

The competition will take place at 7:30 p.m. nightly, Thursday through Saturday at the Monroe Civic Center. The preliminary competition will be held Thursday and Friday, and the live statewide telecast of the finals will be held on Saturday. Qualified contestants from all over the state will compete for the Miss Louisiana crown, educational scholarships as well as advancement to the Miss America pageant in September in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Second Peach Hunt Prize found

The second Peach Hunt Prize for 2016 was found Wednesday, with the team of the Johnson and Matthews family bringing home four passes to the Peach Festival, four Peach Fest T-shirts, one room night at The Hampton Inn of Ruston, a complimentary 30 day car wash pass to RocketFast Car Wash, a $50 gift car to Log Cabin, Ponchatoulas or Cheeburger Cheeburger and $50 cash for their efforts.

McClelland: Keeping Ostrander ‘a coup’

Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland feels he made the right choice in naming Lane Burroughs as Tech’s eighth head baseball coach in program history.
But during Thursday’s press conference introducing Burroughs, McClelland said he feels he pulled off “a coup” in getting assistant Christian Ostrander to remain on staff with a promotion to associate head coach.
Ostrander spent seven years as head coach at Mississippi’s Jones County Junior College before joining Tech as pitching coach last November.
