There are so many big (and bad) headlines that are currently grabbing the attention of our entire country.
We’ve spent much of the past month mourning the loss of several children whose lives were ended too soon. We’ve spent another large portion of the month fearing what will happen in the case that Congress doesn’t figure out how to avoid going over the fiscal cliff, a scary situation of which most of us don’t really understand the full extent (myself included).

Louisiana Tech University was a year-long headline for sports in Lincoln Parish for 2012.
From the time the year began until the final weeks of December, every week seemed to include Tech Nation on the radar of fans, media and Arguably, it just might have been the most news-filled 12 months of sports happenings in the university’s history.
Coaching changes, success on the playing fields, national awards and a transition to a new conference.
And, unfortunately, there was also sadness.
In the year of 2012, Tech was a big sports story waiting to happen.

Robinson joins Tech track staff

Former Sam Houston State star has highly-touted resume

Louisiana Tech University head track and field coach Gary Stanley has announced the hiring of Calvin Robinson as an assistant track and field coach.
Robinson joins the Louisiana Tech Family after spending a little over four years as an associate head coach at the University of Miami in Florida, where he guided a high jumper to the 2012 London Olympics.

Streaking Bearcats at home on Friday

Ruston High School’s boys will go streaking into the new year.
The Bearcats of Head Coach Chris Bush will carry a six-game winning steak into a Friday night game against Shreveport Calvary Baptist.
Ruston (11-4) will play host to the Indians at 6 p.m.
Bush’s squad has won nine of its last 11 games, including three in its own recent Christmas holiday tournament.
This past weekend, the Bearcats took a 53-29 home win over Shreveport Fair Park.

Locals participate in new state voucher program
In April, Louisiana lawmakers passed sweeping education reform bills. One of the most controversial of the bunch allowed students attending schools with a C, D or F letter grade from the state to use state funding to attend private schools. More than 100 students in Lincoln Parish took advantage of the program in its first year, which began with the fall 2012-13 school year.

Make mental health reform a priority

America’s hearts are still broken after 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Like others around the world, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI National and NAMI Ruston) is horrified and saddened by this tragedy.
It seems clear now that the young man responsible for the tragedy had lived with a form of mental illness since childhood.

We hear about a lot of things we can do to improve our health and how we can have a longer life here on Earth.
For example, we’re told to avoid sugary snacks, exercise more, lose weight, control stress and keep our blood pressure down. For a lot of us this will involve making changes to our normal daily routines. But how many of the following things are you already doing to have a longer, healthier life?
• Having a hobby
• Going on a vacation
• Sleeping in on Saturdays
• Connecting with other people
• Flossing your teeth
• Daily prayer

Have a safe, bright New Year

Many parish residents will likely opt to herald in the new year with the sparkling lights and bombastic noises of wares bought from the various firework stands that pop up around the area this time of year.
While the tradition is a beloved one for celebrating the dawn of a new year, it is also one of the more dangerous activities associated with the holidays. Because of this, local fire officials have offered up several tips for those who hope to begin 2013 with a bang.
