Asked to choose between travelling by air or by land, there’s a good bet Skip Holtz Jr. will pick the latter.
Well, for sure, when it comes to dealing with how to reach his destination as a head football coach.
And with Louisiana Tech University about to move into its first year as a member of Conference USA, Holtz is thrilled about the regional sites that comprise the 14-member league.
Not just for him and the Bulldogs, either.

Gibson progressing in D-League

Ex-Tech star scoring in double figures for Canton club

RENO, Nevada — What a difference a year makes for Kyle Gibson.
After averaging 9.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists for Canton of the NBA Development League last season, a year that was his first after suffering a serious shoulder injury the year before, the Louisiana Tech University product is again with the Charge and currently averaging 15.4 points, 2.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds.
He credits his current success to one simple fact.

Creek blasts Quitman

Head Coach Kyle Kavanaugh of Cedar Creek High put five seniors in the starting lineup on “Senior Night” Tuesday and the result was a 74-31 victory over Quitman.
The Cougars led 17-1 after the first quarter and never looked back. Quitman didn’t get its first field goal until 4:50 remained in the first half.
Quitman managed to cut the margin to 29 -16 at halftime, but the second half would belong to the Cougars, who outscored their area rival 45-15.

Tech picked No. 7 in WAC baseball

The Louisiana Tech University baseball team was picked to finish No. 7 out of 10 teams in the Western Athletic Conference, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Twenty-three upperclassmen highlight this year’s squad, which is the most by any Tech team in head coach Wade Simoneaux’s 11-year tenure with the Bulldogs. Tech returns eight starting position players and two starting pitchers, including its top relievers returning to the mound in 2013.

Three parish prep teams in Top 10

RHS, Simboro boys, Dubach girls have high hoops rankings

Three Lincoln Parish teams are included in the Top 10 of their classifications in the current Louisiana Sports Writers Association high school basketball polls announced on Tuesday.
Dubach High’s girls have the highest ranking with their No. 3 listing for Class B/C.
In the boys’ division, Simsboro is No. 5 in Class B/C and Ruston is No. 6 in Class 5A.
Two other parish schools are receiving honorable mention votes in Class B/C boys, as Choudrant is tied with Sicily Island for No. 15 and New Living Word School of Ruston is deadlocked for No. 18 with Elizabeth with two points each.

Funeral services for Mr. Willie Lee Allen, Jr., age 60 of Choudrant, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday February 7, 2013 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Choudrant. Rev. Brad Jones will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Serenity Gardens Cemetery in West Monroe under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
