Rotary names December Students of the Month

The Ruston Rotary Club proudly announces the recipients of the December Student of the Month Award. Recognized by Rotary President Stephen Williams, each student was honored at the Dec. 12 luncheon and presented an award of achievement by program coordinator Jim Tuten. Each awardee has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.5 and has been active in extracurricular activities and leadership roles on their respective school campus.

Schools spread holiday cheer

The Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Adopt-A-School Program recently wrapped up its annual holiday food drive to support the local food bank at Christian Community Action. Lincoln ACHIEVE Coordinator Cathi Cox-Boniol organized the event with each school throughout the parish and was assisted by Rotarian Bill Cox, Super 1 Foods Store Director Chris Turner, New Tech @ Ruston Assistant Director Catherine Letendre, Ruston High School Career Center Counselor Jessie Bryan, Louisiana Tech University’s Theatre Department and Emmanuel Baptist Church. NT@R also provided a team of students to handle the bulk of the loading as the trailer covered the parish.

Tech’s Allen in rare territory

David Lee mentioned him in an acceptance speech at the 2011 edition of the Louisiana Tech University Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
Skip Holtz Jr. referred to him when being introduced last week as the new head coach for the Bulldogs.

Joining the Louisiana Tech Family are defensive tackle DeAngelo Brooks and linebackers Tony Johnson and Nick Thomason.

Washington is 5A All-State pick for RHS

Damian Washington was No. 1 in tackles for losses and quarterback sacks for Ruston High during the 2012 season.
Now, he’s got this distinction in his final season with the Bearcats: he’s an All-State pick.
Washington was announced today as an honorable mention representative on the annual Class 5A postseason team selected by members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Grambling women defeated by LSU

BATON ROUGE — Danielle Ballard scored a game-high 21 points and tied an LSU freshman record for steals with seven as the Lady Tigers used a 15-0 late first-half run to pull away from Grambling State University (1-8) by a score of 90-59 on Wednesday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Bearcats cruise to 107-50 victory

Ruston High School’s boys boosted their record to 8-4 with a 107-50 blowout of North DeSoto at the Bearcats’ annual December tournament on Wednesday night.
Coach Chris Bush’s District 2-5A team played everybody on his roster and got four double-digit scorers in Isiah Buggs with 21, Jamaya Burr with 20 and Jerry Melton and Jakedrick Vernon with 11 each.
