Planned busy week interrupted by hospital stay

I need to tell you about the wonderful week planned for last week and how it went awry — bear with me.
Erma Hudson and I arrived in Ruston on Monday to make my haircut appointment at Marion Duggan’s. She doesn’t work on Mondays, but did that for me. I’d been past due for a couple of weeks, but no one has ever pleased me in Dallas like she does.

GSU holds ROTC commissioning ceremony

The Grambling State University Army ROTC Tiger Battalion Fall 2012 Commissioning Ceremony was held at 10 a.m. Dec. 13 in the Black and Gold Room in the Favrot Student Union.
The guest speaker was Major General Everett H. Thomas, vice commander of Air Force Global Strike Command at the U.S. Air Force's Barksdale Air Force Base. He is a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Miss.
The new second lieutenants are Quention D. Jackson, Brittany J. Longino, Sha'Darrian D. Marshall, Doreen N. Wallace, Anthony K. Whaley and Courtney D. Wicks.

Smoke brings fire trucks to beauty salon

Students at Pat Goins Beauty School had a bit of a scare on Friday afternoon when one of their front rooms started to fill with smoke.
District Chief Tommy Woods said the Ruston Fire Department received a call just after noon Friday about the smoke.
Three fire trucks and one command truck responded and stayed on scene for more than 30 minutes.
Woods said investigations revealed that the motor on a heating unit had burned out.
Firefighters reportedly disconnected the heater and cleared the building of smoke.

Chamber seeking nominations for Russ Award

Nominations for the 2012 Robert E. Russ Award are being sought by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. The award, given by the Chamber and named for Ruston’s founder, is one of the most prestigious civic honors that can be obtained by a Lincoln Parish resident.
Nomination deadline is noon Jan. 11. Nominees for the 2012 award must have been residents of Lincoln Parish since at least Jan. 1, 2011. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber office located at the Ruston-Lincoln Visitors Center, 2111 North Trenton St., and should be returned to the office.

Emergency Siren to be tested on Wednesdays

The City of Ruston’s Outdoor Audible Emergency Warning System will be tested at 11 a.m. the first Wednesday of every month beginning in January. Testing will last about 30 seconds.

Dubach High Alumni seeking donations

The DHS Alumni Association is raising funds to add an LED display to the existing Dubach High School sign. Anyone who would like to contribute can send a check made payable to: DHS Sign Fund, 7710 Fellowship Road, Dubach, LA 71235.
