Funeral services for Melba Jones, age 80, of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 22, 2013 at Temple Baptist Church in Ruston, LA. Officiating the service will be Rev. David Abernathy. Interment will follow at Pines Memorial Cemetery in Ruston, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.

Melba was a career CPA and a member of Temple Baptist Church. Her hobbies included cooking and playing duplicate bridge where she achieved the level of Life Master of Bridge. She died as a result of an automobile accident in Ruston.

One dead following wreck on Highway 33

At 6:33 p.m. Tuesday, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 33 at Louisiana Highway 821.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Mercedes 350, driven by 80-year-old Melba Jones, of Choudrant, was traveling west on Louisiana Highway 821 when it pulled out into the path of a 2004 Ford Van, driven by 38-year-old Lashonda Stringfellow of Farmerville, that was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 33.

HELP to disburse funds

Effective immediately, Humanitarian Enterprises of Lincoln Parish has been awarded Low Income Home Energy Assistance funds to help families bear the burden costs. HELP will be scheduling appointments effective 8 a.m.., Friday. Interested persons may call 251-5136 or visit the HELP Agency at 307 N. Homer St., on the Second Floor. Office hours are 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Appointments will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until
funds are exhausted. Monday of each week will be designated for elderly and/or disabled applicants only.

As most students walked into Grambling State University’s McCall Dinning Hall for lunch Monday they were in for a pleasant surprise. To eliminate any middlemen or miscommunication, the university’s executive leadership team was sitting at tables to hear directly from students.

RFD to install smoke alarms

Residents in one area of the parish will soon be able to sleep a little sounder at night.
That’s because thanks to Louisiana’s Operation Save a Life Program, residents on Water Tank Road will soon have smoke alarms installed in their homes by the Ruston Fire Department for free.
Nancy Wilson, police juror for the area, recognized the need for smoke alarms approximately four months ago and felt compelled to use her position to do something about it.

With their New Orleans influenced sound and energetic style, The Krewe of Swing is a six piece ensemble of the critically acclaimed Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra. The Orchestra's founder and director, New Orleans Native and Grammy Awarded jazz drummer Adonis Rose selected members from the FWJO to form The Krewe of Swing in the fall of 2009.

RCT ready for spring production

Rehearsals are well underway for Ruston Community Theatre’s production of “Anybody Out There?” The cast is in its sixth week of rehearsals, meeting six days a week. The show, written by John Patrick, will be presented with special arrangement from Dramatists Play Service. The play is sponsored by Northwood Medical Center and Dr. Ben Grigsby and will be held March 7-10 at the Dixie Center for the Performing Arts

Teachers, students honored

There are plenty of reasons why Lincoln Parish public schools rank among the state’s best. Forty of those “reasons” were recognized recently when the school district and the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce honored the best of the best with the annual Student and Teacher of the Year awards.

Communities policing decency

Back when I was still in my 20s, I had a pair of jeans that was a size too big. I kept them to remind that me that I had attained a weight-loss goal.
Occasionally, I’d wear those jeans around the house, or maybe down the street to babysit. They were comfortable jeans, and I liked the fancy stitching around the belt loops and the pockets. But eventually — probably at mother’s urging — I got rid of those sagging pants.
