Bearcats end regular season play

For eight Ruston High School players, it isn’t just another game on their own diamond tonight.
It’s an extra special contest, given that eight Bearcats will be closing out their regular season home schedule with a 6 p.m. game against Shreveport Byrd High.
The last-year RHS players include Tanner Frasier, Garrett Patterson, Lain Kranz, Sam Phillips, Jacob Cobb, BJ Findley, Parker Begale and Ivan Wilson, Jr.

Creek tunes up for ‘A’ playoffs

If this is the time of the year for a team to get some wins, then Cedar Creek High’s baseball team is following the script.
With five victories in their last six games, the Cougars (20-9) are getting a proper tuneup for postseason competition.
And that’s what Head Coach Ben Haddox and his squad will be involved in on Friday when they host a bi-district Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association round contest against Ascension Catholic (15-15).
Cedar Creek is seeded No. 8 and the Donaldsville-based Bulldogs are seeded at No. 25.

Lovell’s squad gains fifth straight outdoor title

NEW ORLEANS — The Grambling State Tigers claimed their fifth straight conference title on Sunday at the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Grambling State scored 146 points to earn their ninth title overall.
The Tigers’ head coach, 2012 GSU Legends Hall of Fame inductee Bertram Lovell, was chosen as the men’s Coach of the Year.

Tech, Ole Miss DH cancelled

Louisiana Tech’s softball doubleheader against Ole Miss scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled due to the playing conditions of the field following last night’s rain in the north Louisiana area.
The games will not be made up.
Tech will host an important Western Athletic Conference series against UTSA this weekend with a doubleheader set for Friday at 5 p.m. and a single game set for Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to all Louisiana Tech regular season softball games is free.

Preparing for the worst: First responders undergo drill

The sounds of gunfire and terrified screams of anguish echoed through the air Tuesday at the City of Ruston Public Works Complex on Tennessee Street.
But fortunately, it was only a drill preparing police, fire and emergency personnel for a situation they hope they’ll never have to face.
A mass casualty drill using a scenario of a gunman in camouflage clothing shooting “employees” at the facility started with police being called in, finding and having to “shoot” the perpetrator before searching and announcing the building was clear.

GSU breaks ground on beautification project

Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue announced that one of the gems of the university’s recently launched campus beautification project is “Tiger Square,” a plot of ground that he sees as a gathering place for casual conversations, academic pursuits and, yes, plenty of photographs.

Burglary suspects still sought

A second suspect has been arrested in connection to the burglary of a home on Louisiana Highway 818 on April 7.
Maj. Stephen Williams, spokesman for the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office, said a home located on Louisiana Highway 818 was burgled on April 7. Several items including some televisions, motorcycles, an Xbox and several guns were stolen from the property.
On Monday, investigators arrested Sean Dominic Johnson, 18, of 1600 Haskell Drive and charged him with aggravated burglary. After further investigation, it was revealed that five additional suspects were at large.
