NCLAC to host annual arts camps

Driving through downtown Ruston, it’s pretty evident that this community supports the arts. And to make sure that tradition continues, the North Central Louisiana Arts Council not only supports the local artists, but also helps instill an appreciation for the arts in local youth by sponsoring several projects throughout the year, one being the annual Summer Arts Camps for children who have completed first through sixth grades.

Sales tax shortfall

City of Ruston amends budget after audit

An independent audit conducted by Ruston CPA Douglas Brewer found the City of Ruston’s actual general fund revenues last year fell short of the total budgeted revenues by more than 5 percent.
State law requires a municipality to amend its budget when actual revenues within a fund fall short of budgeted revenues by more than 5 percent or actual expenditures exceed budgeted expenditures by more than 5 percent.

Teen arrested in firearms case

Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies apprehended another suspect in connection with a burglary in Union Parish.
According to the arrest affidavit, on April 29 the LPSO received information that Tommy Harrell, 17, of 7003 U.S. Highway 80 Lot No. 216, was attempting to sell stolen property — including firearms — at his residence.

Health fair open to the public

The Louisiana Tech Student Health Center and Lambright Sports and Wellness Center is sponsoring a Health Fair that will be open to the public from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center.
Green Clinic will be doing complete blood tests for $20 with PSA and lipid blood tests set for $10 each.
There will be demonstrations of senior citizen classes with water exercise set for 7-8 a.m. and chair exercise from 8-9 a.m.
Other demonstrations include full body workouts at 9 a.m., Zumba at 11 a.m., weight training at 11:30 a.m. and Zumba again at noon.

It’s hard to believe that we are already approaching the end of April. Seems like yesterday, vegetable gardeners were anxiously waiting for the magic moment to plant the popular warm season vegetable garden. Now after several weeks of being transplanted or seeded, established plants will require some type of supplemental fertilization. Even if the soil is in prime condition, growing vegetables is a process that takes many important nutrients and adding nutrients to the soil at different times to keep plants healthy and productive is required.

Prep teams hot on diamond

Lincoln Parish sports fans can practically count on it every year at this time: there will be several local teams qualifying for the annual Louisiana High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs.
And sure enough, that’s the case again this year. Three schools in three different classifications still have their 2013 seasons intact and hope to do so after today.
That’s when Ruston High School, Cedar Creek High and Choudrant High will all be on their own fields to host playoff games.
