Grambling edges Southern, 7-6

GRAMBLING — Centerfielder Edwin Drexler went two-for-three with a run batted in and first baseman Brandon Kiser added a home run and single for an RBI to lead Grambling State University to a 7-6 win over Southern University Sunday afternoon.
The victory prevented the Tigers (5-13, 3-5) from being swept in the Southwestern Athletic Conference series by the Jaguars (9-8, 5-4), who had won a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Also adding on two hits each for Grambling were shortstop Juan Bueno (RBI), second baseman Elias Todman and designated hitter Dionte Mandeldove.

GSU’s Miller is All-SWAC tourney pick

GRAMBLING — Joanna Miller capped off an outstanding season for Grambling State University’s women by being announced Sunday to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference postseason All-Tournament team.
The junior guard from Los Angeles, Calif., added the award to her previous honors of being selected as the Newcomer of the Year in the league and also to the first team of the All-SWAC squad chosen for the regular season.
Miller finished the season as the No. 1 scorer in the conference and had high-scoring games in the postseason tournament that was recently held in Garland, Texas.

Tech cancels ‘Inside’ radio show

Because of the team’s travel schedule, an originally-scheduled edition of the “Inside Tech Basketball” radio show has been cancelled for tonight.
The program was slated to be aired via the Louisiana Tech Sports Network from Scott’s Catfish restaurant in Ruston tonight, but the Louisiana Tech University men’s squad will be departing today en route to Florida State University for a Tuesday night opening-round game in the National Invitational Tournament. Tipoff time for the game will be 6:15 p.m., CDT.

Funeral services for Walter Roy Aswell, age 84, of Choudrant, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Choudrant. Officiating the service will be Rev. David Harrell. Interment will follow at Choudrant Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mr. Aswell was born January 24, 1929 and passed away March 16, 2013. He was preceded in death by his son: Walter Roy Aswell, Jr.; and his parents: Walter L. Aswell and Jewell Wade Aswell.

Funeral services for Janie Lue Midkiff, age 95 , formerly of Houston and Beaumont, TX will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston.
Officiating the service will be Rev. Steve Hughes. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Midkiff was born May 24, 1917 in Beaumont, TX and passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 in Ruston, LA.

Funeral services for Kelly Renee Harper Walker, a Lincoln Parish school teacher, were held on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 4pm at Sweetwater Baptist Church in Quitman, LA., with Rev. Stuart Toms and Dr. Wilton Wall officiating. Interment followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery in Jonesboro. Visitation was held on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Sweetwater Baptist Church from 4-8pm.

Kelly was born on July 23, 1976 and passed away on March 15, 2013. She was 36.
