Tigers, Alcorn set for ‘Circle City Classic’ trip

GRAMBLING — Tiger football fans, friends and supporters will head to the Hoosier state for a clash between Grambling State University and the Alcorn State University Braves on Oct. 12 in the “Circle City Classic” at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
“We are thrilled to return to this awesome venue for such a historic occasion,” said Percy Caldwell, Athletic Director at Grambling State University. “Grambling is excited about being the book-end football team, playing in the first and future ‘Circle City Classic’ games.”

Grambling, ULM play tonight

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s baseball, fresh off of a Southwestern Athletic Conference home series against rival Southern University, returns to Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park tonight for a single game against area foe Louisiana-Monroe.
Starting time will be 6 p.m.
Grambling (5-13, 3-5) was a 7-6 winner in the final game of its three-game series against the Jaguars after having dropped the first two contests.

Tech soccer ‘Fun Fest’ is success

The Louisiana Tech University soccer program conducted its third annual “Fun Fest” for the third straight year last weekend and the event proved to be a huge success again.
The extravaganza kicked off Saturday morning with kids playing a wide variety of carnival fun games such as sumo wrestling, target shooting, ball juggling and obstacle courses.
Many local youngsters also participated in a 3-on-3 tournament that was broken up into three age groups and Tech prizes awarded to the winners.

Brown, Ford earn All-State recognition

Simsboro High School, the state runner-up for boys’ basketball in Class B of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, has another All-State representation.
Guard Jamarco Brown is an honorable mention pick for the Tigers after being omitted from the original All-State squad announced last week.
The 5-11 guard averaged 8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game in helping guide Simsboro to an overall record of 28-6 and berth in the state title game held recently in Monroe.
Brown was recently announced as the Most Valuable Player in District 2-B.

Bulldogs host UALR tonight

in

After a 2-1 series win over Stephen F. Austin over the weekend, Louisiana Tech University (7-14) will continue its 12-game home stand beginning with two midweek contests against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock tonight and Alcorn State Wednesday.
Tonight’s game against the Trojans (10-10) will begin at 6 p.m., as will the Wednesday game against Alcorn State.
The game Tuesday will mark the 71st meeting between the Bulldogs and Trojans on the diamond, with Tech holding an advantage with a 51-19 record over UALR.

Lady ’Cats take wins

in

Ruston High’s softball team got winning efforts on the mound from Margueaux Smith and a balanced offense to take wins of 11-0 over Eunice and 8-6 over St. Joseph at the Sulphur High tournament.
Leading the offensive attack for the Lady Bearcats (6-9, 0-2 District 2-5A) against Eunice were Kendall Smith with three runs batted in, a single and two runs scored and two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored by Ashley Webb.

Pauline Elizabeth Jennings

A private family memorial service will be held for Pauline Elizabeth Jennings. She was born in Vivian, Louisiana on September 10, 1922 and passed away in her sleep March 12, 2013, in Ruston, Louisiana after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Loy McDade Nelson, Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. Loy McDade Nelson, Sr. age 92 of Ruston, will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Burkhalter Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Jerry Hilbun. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Furry Fun Walk

The dog days of summer got an early start Saturday as the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department held its seventh annual Furry Fun Walk.
The Fun Walk was held at the J.C. Love Baseball and Softball Complex for the first time after previously being held near the RPAR Offices on James St. and then at Cooktown Park.
“First it got too big to hold near the RPAR office, and then last year we started noticing we were really outgrowing Cook Park,” RPAR’s Ashlynn Shell said. “It’s a good sign that we have to keep moving it because it keeps getting bigger.
