The colors of spring will take on a red, white and blue tint this weekend as Memorial Day celebrations are set for the area.
Grambling American Legion Post 593 got a head start on things Thursday as it had flags placed on the graves of veterans buried in Grambling Memorial Gardens.

Sparta fracking

D’Arbonne commission questions contract wisdom

Southwestern Energy’s decision to enter into a contract to use water from the Sparta Aquifer to frack its wells has stirred controversy.
D’Arbonne Lake Watershed Commission president Steve Cagle said he is dumbfounded as to why Southwestern did not finalize a contract with the lake commission to use water from Lake D’Arbonne, which is a renewable and plentiful resource.
“I just can’t believe it,” Cagle said. “Sparta is already short of water, yet they’re going to sell it to Southwestern? It doesn’t make sense.”

Annual Barrel Race rolls in Saturday

Horses will be rounding barrels this weekend as the D’Arbonne Range Riders will host its 16th annual Memorial Day Weekend Barrel Race Saturday through Monday at the North Louisiana Exhibition Center located at 165 Fairgrounds Road.
For those wishing to participate, sign-up is ongoing the day of the race up to the last 50 contestants. There is a $35 entry fee for participants, but general admission is free. Racing begins at noon on Saturday and Sunday and 9 a.m. on Monday.

Municipal Pool opens Saturday

The Ruston Parks and Recreation Department’s Municipal Pool opens for the summer from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. Hours of operation will be from 1-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday through July 26. For more information, call 255-5800.

Storm sirens help save lives

It could happen here.
The kind of tornado that devastated Moore, Okla., is unlikely to happen here because we’re a little off the beaten path of Tornado Alley, the section of the U.S. where the strongest tornadoes like that Category F4 twister hit.
But our area has seen destructive tornadoes before, and we will again.
And fortunately, like the residents in Moore, we should be able to get some advance notice if such a storm is on its way.

Insomnia keeping you a wake?

Are you one of those people who suffer from insomnia?
Sleep is a major problem for many Americans, according to a new report that acts as a kind of "state-of-insomnia" in the U.S.
The review, published by the medical journal The Lancet, finds that nearly a quarter of adults are unhappy with their sleep patterns, while up to 10 percent meet the criteria for full-fledged insomnia — putting them at a greater risk for depression, hypertension and diabetes.

Armede Wright Harrell

A celebration of the life of Armede Wright Harrell, 85, of Dubach, will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Baskin officiating. Interment will follow at Salem Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Ruston. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Friday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrell was born October 12, 1927 in Lincoln Parish and passed away May 23, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family. She was a strong Christian woman who was a faithful, lifetime member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Bobbie Rose Nick Griffith of Arlington, Texas, will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, May 26, 2013 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Farmerville, with Jared West officiating. Interment will follow in the Mineral Springs Cemetery in Ruston, LA. ,Bobbie was born July 14, 1943, in Ruston, LA, and passed away May 18, 2013. She grew up in Monroe, LA, and graduated from Ouachita Parish high School in 1961.
