Show your heart some love this Valentine's

Degrie, Elizabeth (New).jpg

For Louisianans, this week is jam-packed full of fun. Two of the most decadent holidays known to man happen to fall within the confines of this week.
Today is Mardi Gras, which roughly translates to “farewell to flesh.” Though not everyone who celebrates the holiday — usually with parades, food, wine and other indulgences — is Catholic, the main point of the holiday is to celebrate as the season changes into Lent (which begins Wednesday). During Lent, many Catholics fast from something they like as part of their religious traditions.

A Ruston man is in jail after an investigation reportedly revealed he had pawned stolen items at a local pawn shop.
Capt. Tim Parker, spokesman for the Ruston Police Department, said investigations revealed that someone had stolen a diagnostic computer from East Texas and pawned it at a local pawn shop. Further investigations reportedly led officers to Lennie Jay Pittman, 41, of 208 E. Texas Ave.
Officers obtained a warrant and it was served at approximately 4:51 p.m. Friday.

Event kicks off March 16
012013 Furry Fun Walk 1 C.jpg

The Ruston Parks and Recreation Department is in pre-event mode and working hard to make the seventh consecutive Furry Fun Walk the best yet.
The free event is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. March 16. The community is encouraged to join — with their dog on a leash — for a stroll through one of the 11 scenic park facilities, the J.C. Love Softball Complex on Ball Park Road.
This is a move from previous park locations as the need for additional parking and room to roam has become a necessity due to the popularity of the event.

Chamber exceeds its membership drive goals

On Jan. 22-23, the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce set out on a two-day member drive with the help of approximately 75 volunteers and Your Chamber Connection, a Ft. “Our goal was to reach 100 new members, and we exceeded that goal. Last count I saw was 123 and it could be higher than that today,” said Gregg Phillips, who also chaired the event.

Members of the sponsoring organizations posed with a mock check showing the amount raised in this year’s local St. Jude Radiothon — $124,568. “We thank the community so very, very much for helping us, not only this year, but for 31 previous radiothons,” Susan Elkins, event co-chair, said. “We thank you not for ourselves, but for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.” Sponsors were KXKZ 107.5 radio station, the Zeta Rho chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Super 1 Foods. The event was held Feb. 4 and 5.

For those traveling along the main drag of Downtown Ruston, some may have noticed an old favorite recently received a new name — along with new owners — as Monjuni’s is now Little Pizzoli’s Italian Café.
“We purchased Monjuni’s in October and changed the name to Little Pizzoli’s shortly thereafter,” said new owner Eric Hanna.
“The name means ‘little pea’ in Italian, which was our granddaughter’s nickname.”
And in the Italian tradition, Hanna keeps cooking and his business a family affair with co-owners Suzanne, Eric’s wife, and their daughter Kaitlin.
