It probably doesn’t show up on your calendar, but May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. And you might agree that such a month is useful, when you consider the following:
• Three in 10 workers entering the workforce today will become disabled before retiring, according to the Social Security Administration.

Ruston Family Medicine ribbon cutting

Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held May 2 for Ruston Family Medicine Center, located at 206 East Reynolds Drive, Suite C-3 and K, in Ruston. Ruston Family Medicine Center is the offices of Drs. Janice Ford, Dan Thompson and Stacy Conville. The ribbon cutting was sponsored by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

On road for quarterfinals

Junior catcher/pitcher Austin McNeill will be one of the Cedar Creek High starters in Monday’s 5 p.m. Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association quarterfinal round playoff game at Monroe Ouachita Christian (29-5). McNeill had a game-winning, two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Cougars (22-9) to a 9-8 regional round victory over Ville Platte Sacred Heart earlier this week.

Hosting regional battle

Senior Garrett Patterson will be trying to make some key contributions for Ruston High (30-5) in its Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association regional round home playoff game against Sulphur (23-11) on Monday starting at 5 p.m. Patterson had a single and triple in the Bearcats’ 10-0 bi-district round home victory over Slidell Northshore High earlier this week.

Techsters clinch tourney berth

SEATTLE — Louisiana Tech University made sure this weekend that it would be participating in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference softball tournament that will be held at the Lady Techsters’ Complex starting on Wednesday.
The Lady Techsters (26-24, 11-10) captured wins of 4-3 and 7-3 on Friday and then was a 6-5 come-from-behind winner on Saturday against Seattle University (20-33, 8-13).
With the wins, Tech clinches a berth in the league tournament.
Kristen Miles had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to bring in the decisive run in Saturday’s game after trailing earlier.

Brad Laird era kicks off Monday

For Brad Laird and Ruston High School’s football squad, the wait is over on Monday.
That’s when the former Bearcat star makes his first on-the-field a Laird, who quarterbacked RHS to a Class 4A Louisiana High School Athletic Association state title in 1990, will be sending approximately 100 Bearcats out for their first session of spring drills at 2:30 p.m.

Creek’s Bennett is state champ

BATON ROUGE — Blair Bennett of Cedar Creek High captured a Class 1A state championship in the girls’ discus at the 2013 Louisiana High School Athletic Association track and field meet held on Friday at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of LSU.
Bennett took the title with a mark of 100-4 to beat out Monroe Ouachita Christian’s Anna Mulhern, who had a throw of 97-2.
Cedar Creek High finished No. 10 as a team in the girls’ division with 20 points and the school’s boys shared No. 22 with Grambling High and Oberlin with seven points each.
Other state meet finishers for Cedar Creek and Grambling High included:
• BOYS: Chase Murphy, CC, pole vault, No. 6, 10-6; Jordan Williams, CC, 800-meter run, No. 4, 2:08.93; Ryan Dwyer, CC, No. 5, 400-m dash, 53.57; Mosanto Nelson, GHS, No. 3, 3,200-m run, 10:27.64.
• GIRLS: CC, No. 4, 400-m relay, 52.45; Ann-Marie Kimble, 300-m hurdles, No. 3, 48.87.
