Give professional hockey a chance

Football will always be king in the South, with baseball and basketball in a distant second place.
However, it’s past time for the South to catch on to the best kept secret in sports, playoff hockey.
The NHL is nearing the conclusion of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and so far the typically riveting sporting spectacle has been true to form.
The defending champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, were eliminated from contention Monday night in Game 7 by the St. Louis Blues in front of a raucous Midwestern crowd.

Butler selected 30th overall

CHICAGO — Vernon Butler’s signature look involves wearing sunglasses. That accessory was needed Thursday evening amidst the bright lights of prime time in Draft City as the Louisiana Tech defensive tackle was selected in the first round of the 2016 National Football League Draft by the Carolina Panthers with the 30th overall selection.
Butler’s pick in the first round marked the first Conference USA player and first player from Louisiana to be selected in the 2016 NFL Draft. He is the first defensive lineman from a Conference USA school to go in the first round since 2012.

Diamond ’Dogs hit road to take on UTSA

After a successful week on the diamond in non-conference action, Louisiana Tech will step back into league play this weekend when the Bulldogs travel to take on Conference USA foe Texas-San Antonio in a three-game road series.
The weekend series is set to begin at 6 p.m. today at Roadrunner Field, while game two is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday in San Antonio. Texas.
Tech and UTSA will wrap up the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Bulldogs ahve won three straight and seven of their last eight heading into the league series against the Roadrunners.

Cougars set for quarterfinals

Mary Kate Pardue and the second-seeded Cedar Creek Cougars will take on seventh-seeded Vermilion Catholic at noon today in quarterfinals play of the Class 1A high school softball playoffs in Sulphur. Semifinals and the championship game are set for Saturday.

Tech golfer Lange honored

For Victor Lange, the celebrations continue. A day after the Louisiana Tech senior helped the Bulldogs to their first conference championship since 1980, Lange was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team.
Lange finished 54 holes of stroke play tied for the individual lead with Alabama-Birmingham’s Tayler Eyster at 7-under-par 209 as he carded a 7-under 65 over the final round to move up to a tie for the top spot. Lange would eventually fall in a playoff hole to Eyster.

Baseball playoffs to resume

Tyler Nutt (above) and the 26th-seeded Ruston High School Bearcats return to Class 5A baseball playoff action at 6 p.m. today as they begin a best-of-three series at No. 10 seed Zachary. Jace Moss (below) and the ninth-seeded Cedar Creek Cougars hit the field for Class 1A action at noon Saturday as they play at No. 8 St. Martin’s Episcopal. In Class B, seventh-seeded Choudrant will take on No. 23 seed Hornbeck at 3 p.m. Saturday.
