Tech’s Sherry is state winner

Louisiana Tech head soccer coach Kevin Sherry was honored as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year after leading his young Lady Techster team to a 12-5-4 record that included an 11-game unbeaten streak and a tie with No. 19 ranked Denver.

Russos help lead team to success

Former Louisiana Tech University head men’s basketball coach Andy Russo and daughter Allie are helping Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Fla., enjoy another successful season. The Class 4A school consists of K-12 and an estimated 500 students at the high school level. Russo, who directed the Bulldogs into the NCAA playoffs during the mid-1980’s, serves as the Saint Andrew’s School head coach. His daughter is a senior and four-year starter who is averaging 19 points, eight steals and seven rebounds a game.

Melton-led RHS defeats Neville

Ruston High’s Bearcats put the finishing touches to a perfect performance in their own holiday basketball tournament on Friday night.
The Chris Bush-guided Bearcats won their third game in as many tournament appearances with a 57-35 win over Monroe Neville.
Jerry Melton led the way for Ruston with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Also making key contributions in the win were Jamaya Burr with 10 points, Raheem Regis with six points and Darren Crawford and Jakevin Carter with four points each.
Overall, Ruston improved to a 10-4 record and has now capture five straight wins.

First deer for Sheldon Pylant

Sheldon Pylant, 10, recently killed his first deer — a doe — while hunting with his father, Brad Walker. Pylant, who is a fourth grade student at Garden Ridge Elementary School in New Braunfels, Texas, got the kill with one shot from his .243 rifle. He is the grandson of Reagan and Delaine Pylant of Ruston and Steve and Robin Walker of Tyler, Texas.

WAC tourney tickets slated to go on sale

All session tickets to the 2013 Western Athletic Conference basketball tournament have gone on sale at the Louisiana Tech University Ticket Office, as fans are encouraged to pre-purchase their tickets.
All-session tickets (which are good for both men’s and women’s games) cost $165 and can be purchased by calling the Tech Ticket Office at 318-257-3631 or emailing techtickets@latech.edu. The 2013 WAC tournament is set March 12-16 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Scholarship event set Dec. 30
A scholarship fundraiser in honor of the late Sister Mae Ollie Givens is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at Greater Magnolia MBC, located at 465 W. Cypress Ave. in Bastrop, where the Rev. Mozell Smith Jr. is pastor.
The event will feature the Original Jubilettes of Downsville featuring Leroy Burks and Miracle Aires of Minden.
All soloists, musicians, choirs and groups are welcome. Everyone is invited.

Concord Union Baptist Association has available Seminary Extension classes.
