Local residents are likely to hear some popping sounds in the next few days as many celebrate the New Year by shooting fireworks.
However, within the municipal limits of Simsboro and Ruston, there should be quiet, as the shooting of fireworks is prohibited.
Ruston Police Department Capt. Tim Parker said the office typically receives a few calls reporting the illegal shooting of fireworks for a couple of days leading up to New Year’s and afterwards.

After more than 26 years in Ruston, a local beauty shop closed its doors on Saturday.
Monroe native Jackie Grayson opened Grayson’s Family Hair Styling inside the Interstate 20 Shopping Center in June 1986.
“I lived in Monroe, and Ruston was just a great town,” she said. “It had everything going for it. It had a college, and it was not overrun with beauty shops for the population size.”
Grayson said when the shop opened, it started a trend for salons in Ruston.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton will indeed be together again next season as the bounty scandal fades into history and the bid to win a second Super Bowl resumes.
Payton has agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, according to two people familiar with the deal.
The people told The Associated Press about the deal Friday night on condition of anonymity because it hasn’t been signed and final details regarding the length of the contract and financial compensation are still being worked out.

Good, bad, ugly in outdoors

in

I know; it’s trite and probably overused to talk about the good, the bad and the ugly. However, that pretty well sums up the year for me as I covered the 2012 outdoors beat for my readers/listeners. Thankfully, the good outweighed the bad and ugly.
FEBRUARY 23-26 – Give these four days a big gold star; sitting firmly in the “good” column. I accepted an invitation to join a group of writers for a “fam” trip to Wisconsin. Why in the world would I want to go way up there to the north country in the dead of winter? I signed on for one reason; the chance to try ice fishing.

Another buck for Brooke

Ruston teenager Brooke Evans, who killed a big buck while hunting with her dad (Thomas Evans) in 2011, recently outdid herself when she shot a solid white 8-point buck. She and her dad were hunting earlier this month with Triple A Outfitters near Carthage, Texas. The deer is not a true albino, according to her dad, because it did not have pink eyes. Brooke is a 15-year-old freshman at Cedar Creek.

Get ready for the ‘what-ifs’ of retirement

in
Conville, Bobby.jpg

The future holds many uncertainties, and your retirement is no exception: “What age should I retire?” “How long will I live in retirement?” “When should I start taking Social Security?” “How will rising medical costs affect me?” That’s why planning is so critical, and a good plan will take into account many of the possible uncertainties. In the process of developing your personal retirement plan, it’s important to map out these “what-ifs” — the scenarios, priorities and choices that you’ll build into your strategy.

Fallin, Randy.jpg

Once again, it’s time to make some New Year’s resolutions.
This year, in addition to promising yourself that you’ll hit the gym more often, learn a new language or take up a musical instrument — all worthy goals, of course — why not set some financial resolutions?
Consider these suggestions:

Being optimistic about 2013

in

As I write this the West Point Military Band is playing and I’m thinking of the end of another year wondering what the new one will bring. I didn’t expect to be ending 2012 in the rehab hospital. I’m not trying to be Polyanna, but I can’t help thinking there are many alternatives that could be worse.
