Junior Auxiliary of Ruston holds annual Clearinghouse

During this time of year, many give to those in need, but rarely enjoy the fruits of their labor, as donations often stay anonymous. However, through the efforts of the Junior Auxiliary of Ruston, a resident might receive the joy of giving by witnessing the excitement of a child during the holiday season by becoming a sponsor in the organization’s annul Christmas Clearinghouse.

Annual Choudrant festival set for Saturday

Local musical performers, games, kids’ activities and a chili cook-off contest are among the festivities at this weekend’s Christmas in the Village.
This will be the eighth year for the Choudrant Restoration and Beautification Society to host the event, which will take place from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Choudrant Park.

D’Arbonne drawdown discussed

The Bayou D’Arbonne Lake Watershed District commission held its regular monthly meeting Nov. 19 in the Union Parish Courthouse Annex where ongoing work on the tainter gate project and updates on the drawdown projects were discussed.
“We are moving ahead with the drawdown,” said commission president Noel James. “We’ve filled in many holes within channels, remarked channels, cut out stumps and made lots of repairs to public ramps.”

Hammond to speak at GSU commencement

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue announces that Central State University President Cynthia Jackson Hammond will be delivering the university’s fall commencement address.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Hammond has accepted the opportunity to address more than 500 graduation candidates this month,” said Pogue. “As an accomplished educator and a dynamic professional who earned an undergraduate degree and a doctorate of education from our institution, she is a wonderful example of what students can accomplish by matriculating at Grambling State.”

Acclaimed pianist to perform Christmas concert

Pianist and composer Robin Spielberg will perform a Christmas concert in the Library Events Center at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.
Spielberg made her Carnegie Hall debut in a sold-out concert at the Weill Recital Hall in 1997. From there, she has performed on PBS, CBS's "Saturday Morning," "Good Morning Arizona," "CBS New Orleans" and "Lifetime Live," not to mention tours in both the United States and South Korea.

Bulldogs’ victory streak ends

NATCHITOCHES — The “Mike and Mike Show” featured a cast of scrappy Bulldogs and Demons at Prather Coliseum on Tuesday night.
It was more than just a meeting of head coaches with first names of Mike at Louisiana Tech University and Northwestern State University in a renewal of their “Pine Cone” rivalry, one that was witnessed by an estimated 2,800 fans.

Simsboro pushes mark to 12-0; New Living Word wins twice

Simsboro High School’s boys rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit, then a 14-point differential in the final half to take a 78-65 win over Sterlington on Tuesday night.
The Class B Tigers, who are No. 2 in the power rankings for their Louisiana High School Athletic Association classification, improved to a 12-0 record.

CHS honor benefits many

When local entities receive national attention, it reflects well on our entire parish. And, this year, Choudrant High School has brought a great deal of positive attention to the area.
First, the school was named one of the state’s Top Gains Schools, based on their 19-point increase in their School Performance Score. This also landed the school with an “A” letter grade from the state.
