Man: Changing standards is a mistake

in

This letter is in response to recent letters and editorials regarding women in combat assignments in the American military.
As a veteran with 35 years of duty in the Marine Corps and Navy, I can speak from experience about the wisdom of putting women in combat assignments. It would be foolish, and it would be wrong. Women were made as opposites to men for a valid reason.

Ways to bolster bee population

Dear EarthTalk: I’d like to have a garden that encourages bees and butterflies. What’s the best approach?
— Robert Miller, Bakersfield, CA
Attracting bees and butterflies to a garden is a noble pursuit indeed, given that we all depend on these species and others (beetles, wasps, flies, hummingbirds, etc.) to pollinate the plants that provide us with so much of our food, shelter and other necessities of life.

Emerging scholars honored at banquet

The Emerging Scholars Program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe recently held its annual banquet to honor freshman and sophomore students. The program targets motivated students seeking to perform research and become “junior colleagues” to ULM professors.
“I congratulate our scholars and thank the faculty and staff for facilitating this challenging program,” said ULM President Dr. Nick J. Bruno.
“Allowing our students to conduct research with our faculty provides them with a very rich and rewarding academic experience.”
Each semester, students from all of ULM’s academic colleges are selected for this prestigious program. During the 2012 calendar year, nearly 120 students participated.
This number includes 41 students who participated through ULM’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute Lab Program.
Emerging Scholars began in the spring of 2003 as a means to bring together outstanding students and dedicated faculty members, who work on a variety of projects.

Consider five key estate planning documents

in
Conville, Bobby.jpg

It may be the subject matter — death, incapacity and taxes — that causes us to avoid estate planning. However, the fact is that, no matter what your age or how much wealth you’ve accumulated, you need an estate plan to protect yourself, your loved ones and your assets — both now while you’re still active as well as after your death. Having an effective estate plan is one of the most important things you can do for your family.

Avoid dangers of family financial delegation

in
Moore, Byron.jpg

Question: What can I do to make sure my financial affairs are handled properly if I have a stroke or something and I cannot take care of things? My wife could not manage this alone. Would one of my children have to step in? That worries me, too.
Answer: It is sad to see a lifetime of carefully constructed financial progress dissipated due to the declining health or mental faculties of an elderly person.
