GSU baseball team falls to SFA

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s baseball team had its early season mark drop to 2-6 with a 9-4 loss to Stephen F. Austin (1-4) Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers were led offensively by infielders Juan Bueno (double, RBI), Dionte Mandeldove (two singles), Darren Farmer (single), Elias Todman (single), designated hitter Jose Longoria (single, RBI) and outfielder Korey Hall (double, RBI).

Blachier, Upshaw unite in matrimony

Hannah Leigh Blachier, of Ruston, and Thomas Wade Upshaw, of Simsboro, were united in matrimony in a 5:30 p.m. ceremony Feb. 9 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating the double–ring ceremony was Brian Mercer.

Hannah is the daughter of Todd and Marilyn Blachier, of Wausau, Wis., and the granddaughter of Doug and Joanne Maulden, of Ruston, Carol Blachier, of Mandeville, and the late Charles Blachier.

A soldier comes home

“I just hope people could understand that I am doing this for a good cause and that it’s not like a video game when it comes to being here — there is no respawn button. You get killed here, you are gone. Game Over.”
That quote came from the journal of PFC Tyler McCann of the Army’s 2nd Division, 1st Battalion — 23rd Infantry — Alpha Co.
He posted it in his journal on July 25, 2012, as he served as a sniper and mortar gunner with his unit in southeast Afghanistan.
Little did the Ruston native know that his life would change only days later.

Learning lessons

Those walking into a classroom earlier this month at Ruston Junior High School might have thought it was for any other subject than math.
Students were gathered in groups, writing on small whiteboards and talking about things such as cleaning supplies and cheese.
These students were part of an onsite coaching lesson for their teachers. Mike Stevens, a Math Solutions OnSite Coach, visited two RJHS teachers to help train them how to use new interactive teaching methods. Financing for this training is provided through a grant from the Gates Foundation.

Ruston resident to appear on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ on Friday

Jessica Haynes, founder and owner of JesKa Shoe Company, will appear on Shark Tank at 8 p.m. Friday on the ABC Television Network. Jessica will pitch her product idea to Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John and Kevin O’Leary in hopes the investors will use their own money to turn her prototype into a profitable business.

Traffic Summit set for Thursday

Individuals who do a lot of driving for their jobs can learn a little more about how to do so safely this week.
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission will present their annual Traffic Safety Training Summit at the Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home Chapel, located at 904 Deville Lane.
Jenny Crume, LHSC Safe Communities coordinator, said individuals interested in attending should let her know by noon Wednesday so that enough food will be prepared for the free event, which will be catered by Ben Christmas.
