Durwood E. Matlock

Durwood E. Matlock of Ruston went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 10, 2013 at the age of 63. Durwood was born on January 13, 1950. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Choudrant, LA. He was a long-time employee of Ruston Industrial Supplies, Willamette Industries and Weyerhaeuser.

He was preceded in Death by his parents, Elmo C. and Frances McGee Matlock; his paternal grandparents, Richard H. and Bell Coile Matlock; and his maternal grandparents, Durwood C. and Burmah Davis McGee.

Ben C. Smith

Ben C. Smith, 80 of Cumming Ga. passed away Tuesday February 5 at his home with family.

Ben was born in 1932 to Paul Kimbrell and Ray Smith and raised in Ruston, LA. He played football for Louisiana Tech and graduated with a chemical engineering degree in 1957.

Man faces drug charges

A 19-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning after the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement team conducted a dorm-room search in conjunction with Grambling State University police.
According to the arrest affidavit, Jonathan Banks, of 1924 Martin Ave. in Baton Rouge, was found in GSU Building 500, Room 217, and arrested on five warrants for distribution of marijuana. At least three of those warrants were reportedly for distribution on campus. He also faces an additional charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Old CAB demolition begins

Crews began the demolition of the old Louisiana Tech College of Administration and Business building Saturday as they knocked down walls on the north side of the facility. The demolition process is expected to be completed sometime around April and plans are to leave the area as a landscaped green space.

The fifth annual ‘’Kupcakes for the Kids’’ fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 14. The event will be held in the lobby of Community Trust Bank, located at 1511 N. Trenton St.

Five named as National Merit finalists

Five Lincoln Parish Students have been named as National Merit Finalists for the 2012-13 school year.
Seniors Jeffrey C. Carroll and Chloe A. Kaczvinsky, both of Cedar Creek School, as well as John Herren, John Moore and Samuel Phillips, all from Ruston High School, achieved the honor this year.
These students are among approximately 15,000 Semifinalists who advanced to the Finalist level.
It is from this group that all Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen.

If our youth truly are our future, then the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana are paving the way for success for generations to come.
Eleven-year-old Da’mon Moreland, a fifth-grader at A.E. Phillips, was honored Thursday evening as the Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Club of NCL during a reception held at the Lincoln Parish Events Center.

White making a difference at Center for Autism

“On Dec. 1,1955, our freedom movement came alive, and because of Rosa Parks we don’t ride in the back of the bus anymore.”
When asked, “What does Black History Month mean to you?” Tiffany White reminisced on her childhood as she recited this line from the Neville Brothers song “Sister Rosa.”
“It is exciting to think how one person can make such a difference,” she said.
