Womack, Wells plan to wed in July

Richard and Rene Womack, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement an approaching marriage of their daughter, Heather Rene Womack, to James Robert Wells.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Thomas Ledford, of Ruston, the late Helen Ledford, the late Mildred Baker and the late R.B. Womack. She is a 1996 graduate of Ruston High School and a 2003 graduate of Louisiana Tech University. She currently is self-employed at Mikki’s Diner in Laurel, Miss.

Phoning in support: Radiothon underway to benefit DART

The annual Domestic Abuse Resistance Team Radiothon, in its 12th year, is broadcasting live at Super 1 Foods from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. today on 94.1 The Q. During the radiothon, various community advocates will speak on the importance of the services DART provides to victims of domestic violence and the budget cuts the organization is currently facing. Pam Dance, with DART, was on the scene taking phone calls early this morning.

Choudrant OKs grant process

If the Village of Choudrant’s 2013 and 2014 funding year applications are successful, three streets in the village could see upgrades in the coming years.
On Monday night, council members voted unanimously — with the exception of Reagan Aswell, who was absent — to adopt a resolution allowing the village to make an application for a Louisiana Community Development Block Grant.

Running for the children

Runners head out at the beginning of the recent Children’s Miracle Network 5K Run organized by Miss Dixie Gem Peach 2013 Mallory Cox. Cox said the event raised $4,000 to donate to the MCN.

Rowland to speak to local TEA Party Monday

The North Central Louisiana TEA Party will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Ruston Country Club. There is no charge to attend and all are welcome.
The guest speaker will be Johnny Rowland. He will entertain with his music and speak as a gun expert on the issue of gun control and the Second Amendment.
Rowland is from rural Northwest Louisiana. He is a professional entertainer and musician, producer, talk show host, television personality and engineer.

Nurses deserve gratitude

May 6-12 is National Nurses Week, a time to acknowledge the highly-skilled, attentive and compassionate nurses and other health professionals who work seemingly countless hours at times to transform the lives of others for the better.
Maybe a Nurses Year would be more appropriate, because nurses dedicate every week to saving lives, providing high-quality patient care and finding innovative solutions to improve patients’ health.

Easy to dwell on the negative

Sometimes, especially in light of today’s tough economic era, it’s easy to concentrate on all the negatives and not look at the overall big picture.
Recent findings by an independent audit conducted by Ruston CPA Douglas Brewer found the City of Ruston’s actual general fund revenues fell short of the total budgeted revenues by more than 5 percent.
