Joesph Wayne Vallery, age 66, of Ruston, LA, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 09, 2013 at the North Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston. Mr. Vallery was born in Lake Charles, LA on October 5, 1946.

Area warned to watch for phone scams

Local officials are warning area residents to be aware of phone scam attempts that have been made recently in the parish.
Ruston’s Libby English received one of those calls Monday afternoon by someone claiming to be working for Medicare.

Two Louisiana Tech University students are ready to spread their wings and fly as they embark in the 2013 Air Classic Race, a cross-country, all-female annual airplane relay.
Having already competed in last year’s race, Jessica Lowery will be joined by newcomer Andrea Ziervogel, who is a sophomore at Tech.

Gala a success for GUNAA

A former hero of the Super Bowl and scholarship recipients were the highlights for another successful fund-raising event held by the Grambling University National Alumni Association last weekend.
At its 2013 “Scholarship Gala,” Doug Williams was honored on the 25th anniversary of his historic Most Valuable Player performance in Super Bowl XXII.
And after he earned the plaudits of various speakers and special guests, event Chairperson Patricia J. Hutcherson announced the recipients of scholarships to students scheduled to attend the university.

Teaching where jelly comes from can be an opportunity to launch an agritourism venture or just have a special time with the people you love. Either way, it will be fun.
My first memory of berry picking was with a neighbor who lived nearby. She would pick us up early in the morning, suggest we wear long sleeves, pants and boots; and bring a small bucket. She almost instinctively knew where the berries were located down each logging road. After the car stopped we would jump out with our buckets, race to the nearby vines and compete to see who could fill his bucket first.
