Techsters win series at Southern

BATON ROUGE — Alayna Kipp and Melanie Goff each drove home three runs and Michelle Jones and Anna Cross combined for a one-hitter to lead Louisiana Tech University to a 10-2 five-inning win over Southern Sunday afternoon at the Lady Jaguar Field.
The victory by Tech (12-10) completed the three-game sweep over Southern on the weekend, as the Lady Techsters outscored the Lady Jaguars 34-12.
Jones (8-5) picked up the win in the circle for Tech, allowing two run, one earned on one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of action.

RHS tracksters sweep to ‘Classic’ titles

The Ruston High School track and field teams recently swept championship honors at the North Desoto Griffin Kickoff Classic, winning the Varsity girls division and the varsity boys division.
Here are the results for the Lady Bearcats and Bearcats:
Girls
• Pole Vault: Rebecca Wheelis, second place.
• High Jump: Quanese Jones, second place; Samantha Webb, third place.
• Javelin: Kristin Clark, first place.
• Shot put: Carrie Bridges, second place; Breanna Cooper, third place.
• Discus: Breanna Cooper, second place; Jessica Woods, fifth place.

'Cats edged by Airline

Ruston High School’s baseball team closed out play in the annual Airline High School tournament Saturday in Bossier City with a 5-4 loss to the host Vikings.
The Bearcats (9-3) compiled a 2-2 record in the three-day tournament, with wins being over Haughton 10-1 and 1-0 over Bossier City Parkway. Ruston also had a one-run loss of 12-11 to Captain Shreve High.
In the loss against Airline, Ruston’s offense featured three hits from Cannon Brasuell. He had two doubles and a single.
B.J. Findley, David Burkhalter, Shelton Wooley and Lain Kranz had a single each.

Tech soccer team gains two victories

CONWAY, Ark. — The Louisiana Tech University soccer team started its spring season off on a strong noite on Saturday evening with a 2-0 win over Arkansas State and a 2-1 win over host Central Arkansas at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
The Lady Techsters and Arkansas State were scoreless at the half, but goals by freshmen Brittany Beddow and Rosie Lethbridge lifted the Lady Techsters to the victory.
Lethbridge continued her scoring into the second match, scoring a goal in each stanza to pull out the second win of the day.

Recovering from a 'spring forward'

So I hear we “sprung forward” this weekend. That’s funny because all I want to do is fall back in bed. Like most, my body thought I woke-up an hour early for the sure joy of it and is now passively aggressively punishing me by refusing to function properly. My biological clock is officially in hibernation mode.
For our countrymen in Arizona and Hawaii, along with those in the Unites States territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island, their morning probably went off without a hitch. Why? Well it’s a long story.

Funeral services for Frances Irene Hampton Stewart, age 83, of Ruston will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Dale Oden. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mrs. Stewart was born June 26, 1929 in Oak Grove LA and passed away March 8, 2013 in Ruston, LA.
She was preceded in death by her husband: James A. Stewart.

Sweet Adelines set open rehearsal

in

Piney Hills Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines will present a free sample of its regional competition package during Friends and Family Night at 7 p.m. Monday in the fellowship hall of the Presbyterian Church of Ruston. In addition to the two contest numbers, several other songs from the chorus repertoire will be performed, and two quartets from within the chorus will sing.
