Freshen up warm-weather cuisine

When the weather is warm, many people are inspired to expand their culinary horizons and look for foods that are light, fresh and satisfying.
Although warm-weather cooking may call to mind backyard barbecues, there is much more to seasonal dining than charbroiled frankfurters and beef patties. Taking a fresh approach to cooking can yield a number of new and innovative meals.

Advocacy with art

The North Central Louisiana Arts Council (NCLAC) and the Pine Hills Advocacy Center are pleased to announce an artful renovation of the Pine Hills Advocacy Center. Artists Melanie Douthit and Linda Snider-Ward, representing the Union Parish Arts Council, designed and executed a mural in the Center in March. The mural is part of a multi-room project, to be completed by several arts groups from around the region. NCLAC is working as a liaison between the Advocacy Center and area artists, in order to give the space a “facelift” for its clients.

Tech ROTC cadet selected for prestigious program

Alexandre Buck, an Air Force ROTC cadet and a freshman in the professional aviation program at Louisiana Tech University, is one of just three Air Force ROTC students in the United States to have been selected to participate in the University of Pittsburg’s Intensive Beginning Russian program this summer on a ROTC Project GO (Global Officer) scholarship.

Girl Scouts giving back

Girl Scout troops No. 555 and No. 351 collected 46 bags of clothing as part of the April partnership with the Goodwill Industries clothing drive. This event not only helps the community and Goodwill, but gives the girls a hands-on experience in helping others and learning the importance of community service.

Morning fire displaces businesses

A 6,000 square foot building with multiple occupants, including a 2,000 square foot flea market, was partially lost due to a fire that occurred shortly after midnight today.
Eric Brazzel, public information for the Ruston Fire Department, said firefighter received the call at 12: 18 a.m. that smoke was coming from the back of a building located at 1414 West California Ave.

Undercover investigation leads to arrest in drug case

A Simsboro man was booked on multiple drug charges May 1 following an undercover investigation by the Louisiana State Police Troop F.
According to reports, an undercover agent prearranged a meeting with Jose Francisco Cornejo, 24, of 3300 217 Gahagan Road No. 43, Simsboro, to allegedly purchase narcotics.
The agent reportedly agreed to exchange $1,200 for 15 grams of methamphetamine. Cornejo allegedly accepted the currency and began weighing the agreed amount of suspected methamphetamine.

‘Stage Coach Trail Day’ on tap Saturday

The Mt. Lebanon Historical Society will present its annual “Stage Coach Trail Day” starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Presented for approximately 45 years, “Stage Coach Trail Day” will begin with the opening of the MLHS Museum, featuring items up for silent auction as well as artifacts of historical interest.
A handmade quilt finished by Our Heritage Crafters will be on display and will be raffled off.
The Country Store will take care of refreshments by selling hot dogs and trimmings starting at 11:30 a.m.

Creek wins state title in golf

Cedar Creek High School captured its fifth consecutive state championship in Division IV of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association earlier this week with a 33-stroke (648-681) advantage over runner-up Ascension Episcopal. Members of the team were (from left) Johnny Maxwell, Christopher Feron, Jordan Cole, Tucker Smith and Zach Pickett. Cole earned medalist honors with a 78-75-153 scorecard. The Cougars have won eight of the last nine state tournaments.

Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson

Some called her “Queen.”
And all of the approximately 125 people wished her happy birthday as Doris Robinson, widow of legendary Grambling State football coach Eddie Robinson celebrated her 94th birthday Thursday with a party held in her honor at the Eddie G. Robinson Museum.

Multiple facility renovations at Tech near completion

Drive through the heart of the Louisiana Tech University campus on Alabama Avenue these days and you will see the renovations of J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, the Lady Techster Softball Complex and the Lady Techster Soccer Complex all nearing completion.
These steady advancements to the Tech athletic facilities have all been funded through private contributions of friends and supporters as part of the “Quest for Excellence” campaign and will greatly benefit the athletic programs as they enter Conference USA.
