Swinging into spring

Swinging in with spring is America’s favorite pastime, baseball.
And in an effort to get local youth excited about the sport, and a chance to show off their athletic skills, Ruston Parks and Recreation will be hosting the annual Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition on May 4.
Beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the J. C. Love Softball Complex located at 400 Ball Park Road, the completion will test participant’s ability to accurately pitch a ball, speed at running bases and distance to drive a ball from home plate.

LPSO seeks 2 suspects

Two men are being sought, and one is in custody, in relation to a home invasion that occurred on Friday night.
According to the arrest affidavit, at approximately 11:59 p.m. Friday, two Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department deputies investigated a home invasion at 150 N. Village, No. 204.
Witnesses stated that three males were seen forcing entry into a residence.
The resident was reportedly severely beaten and was treated in the emergency room of Northern Louisiana Medical Center for injuries resulting from being kicked and punched repeatedly.

Alert application

Weather warnings available via radio, smartphones

The Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) announced recently that Lincoln Parish is implementing ALERT FM as part of its parishwide notification capabilities.
ALERT FM will allow the OHSEP office to notify residents of emergency information via ALERT FM receivers that receive messages using the data subcarrier of all local Lincoln Parish FM radio stations and a smartphone application for both Apple iOS and Google Android.

PAWS of NE La. hosting ‘2013 Super Adoption Day’

in

PAWS of Northeast Louisiana will host the ninth annual “Super Adoption Day” for pets in Monroe this month.
From 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Satruday at the Monroe Petco, PAWS of Northeast Louisiana is teaming up with multiple local animal shelters and rescue groups in an effort to locate permanent, loving homes for numerous homeless dogs and cats.

Gun, knife show taking shot at Civic Center

Although hunting season just closed until fall, those looking to add to their gear, or just their collection may want to look no further than the Ruston Civic Center on May 4-5 dung the Spring 2013 Ruston Gun, Knife and Coin Show.
Items available for purchase include various guns, knives and collectables for sale and trade, coins, duck calls, outdoor apparel, shooting accessories and other items during the two-day event.
Wade Hanks, event coordinator, said this event is sure to impress.

Run for a good cause Saturday

It seems to be the raging trend in Lincoln Parish this spring — running for a cause.
In recent weeks there have been more than a few 5K run/walks benefiting several different causes with more on the way. This weekend the area will play host to run/walks benefiting autism awareness, the Children’s Miracle Network, the South of California Avenue (SOCA) neighborhood and the March of Dimes run walk follows a week later.
And that’s a good thing. Not only will participants be benefiting such causes, they’ll be helping themselves in the process.

This past February, trying to lose some holiday weight, I began to tweak my diet a little in hope that I would consume foods that would give me more energy with less calories. As most know, calories are a source of energy, along with protein and carbohydrates. Since most energy producers are also counterproductive to weight loss when consumed in large amounts, this feat was rather daunting, as I had to carefully weigh my options when shopping at the grocery store.

GRAMBLING — How confident is D.J. Williams in Grambling State University’s offense for the 2013 season?
So confident that the Tigers’ starting quarterback has already started to peg some of his cohorts on that unit with nicknames.
Asked about the play of tight end Brandon Byrdsong during Saturday afternoon’s “Black-Gold” spring game, Williams immediately replied with “Mr. Reliable.”

“He’s ‘Mr. Respond’,” answered Williams.

Cedar Creek High School’s Maggie Manning, who finished as the Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association state runner-up in 2012, will help lead her team into regional action that begins today in Monroe at the Forsythe Park courts. Other members of the Kyle Kavanaugh-coached squad who have qualified for the two-day tournament are Trevor Holden and Wesley Cox.

’Dogs: A tough weekend

Tech goes 0-4 in WAC home series

New Mexico State University completed a four-game series sweep of the Bulldogs on Sunday, as the Aggies defeated Louisiana Tech University, 5-1 and 4-1, in a doubleheader at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
The Aggies of New Mexico State (23-18, 8-7 WAC) took the third and final conference game of the weekend after scoring three runs late in the game to extend their lead to 5-1 before defeating Tech (13-28, 2-13 WAC) in the seven-inning non-conference matchup, 4-1, to complete the weekend sweep.
