Sealed bids for the construction of the following project will be received by the Purchasing Office of the City of Ruston, Louisiana, located at Ruston Public Works Complex, 701 East Tennessee Avenue, Ruston, Louisiana 71270, either by mail or hand delivery, no later than 10:00 A.M. local time on Thursday, August 1, 2013. Shortly thereafter, the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud in the Purchasing Agent's office. Bids received after the 10:00 A.M. deadline will be returned to the bidder unopened.

Funeral services for Chris Lamar Gates, age 61 of Columbia, LA, will be held at 10 AM Friday, July 5, 2013 from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia, LA with Bro. Jesse Henderson officiating.  Interment will follow at Antioch Cemetery in Eros, LA. Visitation will be Friday morning from 9 AM until time of service at Riser Funeral Home in Columbia, LA. Mr. Gates was born on February 17, 1952 in Monroe, LA to the union of his parents: Delmar and Erdell Griggs Gates and passed from this life on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at his residence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Fourth of July won’t have a patriotic boom in the sky over some military bases because budget cuts and furloughed workers also mean furloughed fireworks.
Independence Day celebrations have been canceled at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and at the Army’s Fort Bragg, both in North Carolina. The annual July Fourth celebration also has been scrapped at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga.
The reason is money — namely the lack of it.

Local scores improve 4 percent; mathematics still area of concern

Even adding another test — United States history — to the mix, Lincoln Parish high schoolers have shown a 4 percent increase from 2012 in the number of proficient scores on their End-of-Course exams.
“We are continuing to show improvement in all the testing areas,” Donna Doss, Lincoln Parish school improvement and accountability coordinator, said. “From May 2009-May 2013 — five years of testing results — and adding a new test each year, we have improved our proficiency rate by 11 percent.”

Ratcliff earns RHS honor

Recipient of the school’s 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award

Marley Ratcliff was the recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award given annually to a Ruston High School graduating senior.
The award is given to a senior who has exhibited personality traits of tenacity, strength of character, adaptability and has earned the admiration and respect of the faculty of Ruston High School and Alumni Association.
A college scholarship of $1,500 accompanies the award.

Fuller starts up Little League community baseball

Lucious Fuller remembers when young people in Ruston spent their times on the field as opposed to running the streets and staying inside and playing video games all day.
Now he’s trying to bring that benefit of his youth to young people today.
Fuller started a new little league baseball team Tuesday at Duncan Park, on Arlington Street, near the old Lincoln High School Building.

Twelve youth learned baby-sitting skills during the LSU AgCenter Baby-Sitting Clinic. Cathy Judd, extension agent, said this nine-hour annual clinic teaches youth baby-sitting is a big responsibility.

The Fourth of July isn’t just fireworks, food and fun in the sun.
Independence Day is a reverent, joyous celebration of the freedoms we hold dear to our hearts living in the United States of America. This year, like the 236 others that have been marked since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we remember our roots and those who fought to give us our freedom.
The Declaration of Independence began as a document listing grievances Americans had with England, but it turned into a document of freedom that changed our country, as well as the rest of the world.
