DART accepts donations

Though there are still quite a few days of summer vacation left, the first school bell will ring before long.
Anyone who has visited local stores lately has likely noticed that pens, pencils, paper and other school supplies have already begun to line the aisles ­— and school supply lists will soon publish in the July 28 Back to School edition. While many children will head to the store to pick out the coolest backpacks and the cutest folders for the new school year, some are not so lucky.

Feeling at home in Ruston

If you are a person who can take a step back and look at everything around you, you might find that being in this line of work you hold a front-row seat to a lot of pretty spectacular events.
My family has this vision of what I do — running around, camera in hand trying to find the next big story. My husband, on the other hand, I think believes I go around talking to random people and trying to find out what is going on that we’re missing here at the paper.
But the truth is it is a combination of both ideas plus covering what we knew was already scheduled.

Cox-Boniol wins national Kappa Delta honor

At its recent National Convention held in Boston, Kappa Delta Sorority named Cathi Cox-Boniol as a recipient of the Order of the Pearl recognition; this distinction honors Kappa Delta alumnae who have achieved prominence in professional and civic service at the national, state, and local levels, representing the highest principles of the sorority. Eleven alumnae from throughout the country received this recognition for 2013.

Tuten speaks to Lions Club

New Lincoln Parish Detention Center Supervisor, Jim Tuten, spoke extensively at a recent meeting of the Ruston Lions Club. Mr. Tuten told the Lions about some of the changes and updates that have been initiated since the operation of the Detention Center was taken over by the Sheriff’s Office July 1.

Tech’s Dixon Doak Walker Award candidate

Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
Dixon was a 2012 Freshman All-America selection as he led the nation averaging 14.0 points per game. The Strong, Ark. native set NCAA Freshman records last season with rushing touchdowns (27), total touchdowns (28) and total points scored (168). All three of those records were held by Marshall Faulk before Dixon broke them.

Church named Bulldogs’ director of basketball operations

Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White announced today the hiring of Kyle Church as the new Director of Basketball Operations.
“Coach White is one of the top head coaches in the country and I’m very honored to be a part of his staff,” said Church. “Having worked with coach White and his three assistants before, I know how hard they work and how much they are dedicated to the success of Louisiana Tech basketball. I am very excited to be a part of the LA Tech family and look forward to getting started right away.”

Lady Techsters announce soccer slate

Louisiana Tech will face lots of familiar foes during the non-conference portion of their 2013 schedule, but once the Lady Techsters kick off their inaugural C-USA season many first ever meetings will take place.
Tech’s campaign opens up on the road against LSU on Aug. 23 with many more road challenges around the corner as the schedule consists of 13 of the 20 matches away from Ruston.
